What if I gave you $100,000?

What if I gave you $100,000 a day for a year?

What if I gave you $100,000 a day for 20 years?

You would still not have 1 billion dollars.

Same time that Pritzker is telling city and state officials to start arresting and prosecuting federal officials for assaulting Illinois citizens.

OT1H, this is clearly really bad.

OTOH, our federalized design might end up being an absolute godsend.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Why isn’t this everywhere right now? 😡
Massive flooding in western Alaska. Search & rescue in process. Power outages. Communication down.
So tell me again — why are we not seeing this on the news?

So it comes down to us. Democracy is government of the persons by the persons for the persons. We the persons are our last best hope. And when we wrest back our government, we need to reform our laws accordingly. /🧵
zibilith.bsky.social
When governmental institutions lose sight of that fact—like when courts allocate to corporations power that belongs to persons, they imperil democracy and invite tyranny, corruption, abuse, and injustice.
zibilith.bsky.social
It is a mere quirk of the English language that we use “people” as the plural for both individual and multiple persons.

Individual persons, with their intrinsic desire for freedom, are the basic units of democracy.
zibilith.bsky.social
They can tolerate violations of liberty and autonomy in ways that persons cannot. Some organizations may even increase their profits by conceding some freedom to a corrupt regime.
zibilith.bsky.social
Even news organizations, who, in theory, should be incentivized defend their Constitutional rights can’t be relied upon to do so at the expense of profit. At bottom, an organization’s primary mission is to make money for rich people or to simply endure.
zibilith.bsky.social
Our system of self-governance was established foremost to preserve—as much as possible—the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Threats to these rights are urgent, painful and existential to persons in a way that has no parallel for organizations.
zibilith.bsky.social
We the persons and our electoral speech stand in this moment as a last defense against tyranny. Corporations and even not-for-profit organizations cannot be relied upon to stand with us. Their incentives are not aligned with ours.
zibilith.bsky.social
Corporations may be “people” for some legal purposes, but when it comes to democracy they are not situated similarly to persons.

Electoral speech ought to be the exclusive provenance of persons, not people. This has never been clearer.
zibilith.bsky.social
By allowing organizations to pump unlimited money into our politics, the Roberts Court (Citizens United) handed corporations substantial sway over who gets elected and which policies are pursued.

We The Persons🧵:
Listening to a clip of Obama talk to Marc Maron about law firms and universities needing to take a stand against tyranny crystallized for me a crucial distinction between “persons”and “people” when it comes to democracy.

OBAMA: “Better’s good… we’re not gonna get to perfect. Do I think single-payer with no profit motive would’ve been smarter? Absolutely.”

President Obama tells Maron the ACA was a compromise because he didn’t have the votes for what he really wanted. #MedicareForAll

“Your honor, you appear to expect us to bear the *whole* burden of proving the defendant guilty. Isn’t that a little unfair?”

This guy (Reverend David Black) is a real American hero.

More of this - everywhere - please!

Federal agents aren’t trying to keep the peace. They want violence to escalate so that Trump can declare martial law.

They shot a reverend in the head with pepper balls while he was praying in front of an ICE facility. If that doesn’t tell you where we are as a country, nothing will.

#cats / #vets post:
Does this nubby skin tag thing on my cat’s neck need immediate veterinary attention? It’s not crusty or irritated. It’s an oblong protuberance, about 1/4” long and 1/8” in diameter that feels like a finger.

Thank you!
