The Dnipro district of Kherson lies in the "red zone", closest to the front line. In the Korabel neighborhood, not a single apartment block remains undamaged by strikes. Safety is relative: drones can reach any part of the city.

This is nonsense. M14 is just one road connecting Mykolaiv and Kherson. No more road connections remaining. (I'm in Kherson now, just in case, and have been reporting from here since 2022). About 60,000 left now.

Charred vehicles, smashed minivans, upside down, off the road. Surreal drone tunnels made of poles and fishing nets flowing in the wind. The high-pitched beep of drone detectors, a trembling silver screen on which you can see yourself the way the Russian pilot sees you before dropping explosives.

As you are driving in Kheson, you suddenly fall into an alternative reality. Everything around is ablaze or smouldering. The air is filled with a mix of soot, smog, and the suffocating stench of chemicals. People report helicopters dropping gas.
