The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published 14 October 1892. A critic lamented Doyle was a better writer than this, but was resigned that one who ‘wishes to make literature pay must write what his readers want.’

A Franklin Leonard of the theatre would be hilarious

If you took a job in 1880 as a rich person's amanuensis, you could at least do visiting cards, letters to The Times, bank manager, son in India, etc. Time to work on your penny-a-word novel, probably. This person seems to believe they're George S. Kaufman.

I've just seen a job advertised. A playwright is offering to pay someone $30 an hour to strategize script submission opportunities for them, write cover letters, emails, etc. 'As production opportunities develop,' the person will become the playwright's 'primary literary and administrative support.'

A post on ILX a little earlier about D’Angelo and this strikes me as so very correct. - www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSe...
I played through the discography today and was struck by the way "Playa Playa" and "Ain't That Easy" open their respective albums — in both cases, rather than making some hurrah of reintroducing him, they kind of drop in media res into D'Angelo's workshop, like you can feel it all taking shape around you, and eventually the murk resolves into grooves, and he's just there, doing the thing. Almost like the albums conjure him, or his essence precedes his presence.

these young people adored him

F. Murray is 85 but has such a supple voice that he made Krapp's younger self crystal clear.

I saw him play Krapp recently. (He was great. He kept the bananas.) The other actors (two more Becketts) were all decades younger & they dared him to bring in his Oscar so they could touch it. He did. Just brough it along on the subway.

This is the D'Angelo performance that I've never forgotten. This song was already a huge hit but the way he took it from contemporary R&B to church revival illustrated how connected those idioms are. A revelation for those who didn't know, and an affirmation for those who did.

I am agnostic about a ‘writing community.’ I have writer friends, they’re good people. I admire them as hopefully they do me. I try to bring along those I believe in. But some work is so totally opposed to what I believe in I shouldn’t have to pretend to respect it. We are not all on the same team.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

D'Angelo. I remember when Brown Sugar came out. I was young & pretty ignorant of soul, r&b, etc. The video came on & I thought oh god, nothing sounds like this. It got me thinking. Now I know where he came from, but his use of those influences is still gorgeous, surprising, & unique. RIP.

Like, I own good books about Powell & Pressburger. But in an hour he gave everybody a good idea of who they were, how & why they did what they did, why they're important. And not dryly. He knew Powell well. And it was funny.

Scorsese almost became a Jesuit - he liked worldly things too much, heh - but you can see he would have been an excellent one. The voracious wish to acquire & share knowledge to educate The Whole Person. I told you I saw him speak on Powell & Pressburger for an hour, it was better than a book.

I’m just thankful he’s still part of the discourse. You can count on one hand the number of directors at his age that still have something valuable to say and have contemporary offerings that don’t smack of self-parody. *coughcoppolacough*

Uncle Marty taught himself to make movies by storyboarding the ones he saw on TV. That turned into the movies in his head.

Most American filmmakers owe a huge debt to comics, both comic strips and comic books. It's a gateway media for filmmaking and Scorsese knows this.

Scorsese appeared at Comic Con to discuss George Lucas's forthcoming museum of popular art. His point was that popular art is really important - it's the first thing to fire your imagination, make you consider storytelling. He's saying enjoy it but use it, don't limit yourself to it.

Internet Nazi types use a frog for some of their memes - bringing frogs to an anti-fascism protest has a satisfying narrative symmetry to it

Didn't consider this but oh yes

Newsom acting like Trump Lite = bad theatre, seen it before, lacks Trump's perverse charm, speaks to a closed loop

Portland frogs posting up on ICE goons = good theatre, never seen it before, highlights a ridiculous thing by juxtaposing another, kids love it, shareable among all kinds of adult

In that case we entirely agree, yes.

Albee, for example, gets hit for not allowing Black actors. He said (reasonably enough) if the characters were Black he'd have written them differently. I think the guy who was friends with LeRoi Jones felt he didn't dare, & there's something to that.
wychstreet.bsky.social
You're right, of course. But this can be cynical, as you say, or honest. I get frustrated with myself for writing about the same kinds of people. I'm certainly interested in more. I try to stretch myself. But in some cases I know it would do me & the character a disservice. Because I'm outside it.

Elaborate on this if you would

The only Columbus story I have involves my dad. In the 80s Delaware Ave in Philadelphia was named Christopher Columbus Blvd. To this day no one calls it that. Not even in ads. One day dad saw a guy lost.

- I'm looking for Columbus Blvd
- You're on it
- The sign...
- You're on it
- Fuck off
