Recent salt wood firing with Matthew Kelly and got this beautiful jug back from the kiln. The glazes melted nicely over the texture and the orange peel texture on the bare clay is nice.

Shino Chawan with Ash glaze accents. Woodfired to cone 8. The atmosphere in the kiln really brings out the characteristic of the shino and the wild clay body.

Ash glazed cup, it has an uneven wobble because the glaze dripped all the way to the foot. The red flash comes from copper that was in a nearby pot and it jumped from one to the other.

Ash glaze bowl fired in a saggar box. The deep green comes from the iron found in the wood ash and the wild clay in the glaze recipe. I’m not sure what caused the blue speckles, I think the silica sand in the wild clay caused it. #ashglaze #pottery #wheelthrown #pottersofbluesky #ceramics #wildclay

it’s a fun simple shino made with kaolin, feldspar, and soda ash, i made it thick and applied it by hand for cracking. it crawls while drying and carbon traps in the kiln. shinos r rlly simple and i recommend giving it a try!

it’s a dream to throw! i did have some issues with cracking during drying so i think drying it slowly is best. i recommend also getting the starworks wild porcelain clay too, they don’t sell it online but it looks really cool for woodfiring.

Spent all day yesterday glazing all my works for an upcoming woodfiring to cone 6. Everything is glazed in either my ash glaze or shino. I’m excited to see how it works out.

ash glaze tests, light green is just normal ash glaze base and the darker green is same base but wild clay replaces the kaolin. the clay provides more iron and makes it darker

this clay doesn’t have much strength on the wheel so i tried out a new method. i threw the spout first, cut it off and then threw the body. i reattached the spout and it worked pretty well. also made a teabowl.

Day 18: Ash glaze sake cup. The glaze when thin is a streaky blue on the dark clay but when it’s too thick it becomes like a nuka white glaze.

Day 17: Nezumi shino. This was a glaze test and it worked! Made from 3 ingredients and different applications give different looks.

Day 16: Wild clay teapot with minimal glaze. The glaze is made from an arbitrary mix of wood ash and shino. I love how the spout looks, it feels alive.

Day 15: Wild clay chawan. It was difficult to make because of the shortness of the clay but that gives it a lot of character. The interior is glazed with shino and wood ash.

Day 14: Vase made by putting kohiki slip on a tall cylinder and then stretched it out and tore the rim a bit. Washed with red iron oxide.
