I'm glad that time has really left me an appreciation for the unique uncanny quality of 00s cg... I love hand drawn above all but the sort of super reality of the reideen 07 robots or the blue submarine crabs feels like it compliments the wistful moody atmosphere of those shows.

The Grunbeld novel aside from being bad apparently does have a very interesting conceit in there where his sacrifice offered themselves against his will, so it's possible to achieve one without Betraying Someone if they willingly give themselves

That absolutely doesn't preclude there being assistants on this one but if you've ever heard the famous "Inking the Akira city explosion orb" story I feel like he probably would have been very into hand drawing a shitload of pills to Make A Point

AFAIK Otomo specifically was known for doing Akira with way fewer than the usual number of assistants and kind of overworking himself so while I can't say with certainty it's good odds this is mostly him

So that's where you got the weird era where she was doing that retroactive "Actually this character was gay/jewish/black" stuff to win points, then suddenly that wasn't enough to be passively celebrated anymore and she lost her mind. She *wants* to be a progressive hero for doing nothing.

Imo happened to her was that she was lauded a great deal for being Progressive at a time when it was still left of center in the mainstream to be like "women should be seen as human" and then when the window moved further she scrabbled to keep being celebrated w/out having to actually grow/change
