Core Concepts: Wild animal welfare science — Wild Animal Initiative
Wild animal welfare science focuses on understanding the subjective experiences of individual wild animals with the goal of improving their welfare.

But as we mention in the paper and the Q&A, more research is definitely needed before anyone can make sound management recommendations.
wildanimalinitv.bsky.social
We address the question of social dynamics in the paper (e.g., in and around Table 1, we note that cooperative, group-living species may be less likely to benefit from contraception in terms of welfare, and there could be some potential for it to disrupt social structures).

Researchers, wildlife managers, and government agencies are also aware of the cases where secondary exposure *is* likely if used in the wrong way (e.g., for oral baits), so they take steps to reduce the risk of leakage and secondary exposure. (Example: downloads.regulations.gov/EPA-HQ-OPP-2...)

These are good questions! Long-term effects on the population and environment are mostly not a problem for the most common form of wildlife contraception (immunocontraceptive vaccines) because they're used in small quantities, they aren't hormones, and they degrade quickly.

We were excited to fund this project on crayfish welfare — arthropods whose welfare has not received a great deal of attention in the scientific literature so far. Check out the initial results on Bristol Zoological Society's blog.

WAI grantees Jess Harvey-Carroll and Daire Carroll developed a framework applying the well-established principle of the four Rs for animal welfare in research to ensure the ethical use of animal-borne devices during post-release monitoring of rehabilitated animals. buff.ly/MYqeG5Q

That’s a wrap on #AWRN2025!

Thanks so much to the organizers and to everyone who took part in today’s workshop on transferring welfare assessments to wild animals. We’re very grateful to have had the opportunity to help spotlight #wildanimalwelfare at this year’s meeting.

We’re at #AWRN2025 this week, where we’re really excited that #wildanimalwelfare is being highlighted.

Wonderful to see some of our grantees taking center stage, including an opening plenary by María Diez Leon and a great talk by Ricardo Lemos de Figueiredo on crayfish welfare.

A WAI-funded project found that the release of translocated crayfish led to increased refuge use and aggression among resident crayfish — suggesting a potential negative welfare impact of a conservation translocation program.
