Even grand juries, which ostensibly filter bad prosecutions, are completely reliant on the prosecutor to tell them what the law is. The criminal law is actually very difficult and there's a reason it's handled by professionals.

As a criminal defense attorney, this is a terrible idea. Nevermind that prosecuting a criminal case is a difficult thing to do and involves a lot of rules and laws that even prosecutors mess up all the time, you've basically turned every divorce case into a criminal prosecution.

Oh yeah buddy no worries just carry it up the stairs.

The Roberts Court will have accomplished through legal fiat in 2025 what southern terror accomplished in 1877.

The Democrats will NEVER criticize a Kennedy. It's not just RFK, that guy from Louisiana gets a pass all the time.

These ideas might explain aspects of Chinese advantage in a particular moment, but if we're talking about what you're talking about, which is long term viability, that is extremely difficult. Just knowing China (which is good!) is not enough. Prediction is hard, especially about a changing future.

It's a good thing I sniffed this out early.

How do we inoculate our military against conmen? Or is that just baked into the military cake with all that money sloshing around and no one wanting to face up to how difficult and expensive it actually is to be the top military in the world with China playing catch-up?

If the US and China wreck each other (the most likely outcome), then Russia is well poised to take advantage. A US/China war would rewrite the international order to a degree not seem since WW2, Russia may want to keep its powder dry for the aftermath.

Which if you're Russia seems like a reason to hedge your bets in a US/China war. Providing some support to China without crossing the line and triggering a disastrous war with NATO would be a smart play. If China wins, you stay in their favor. If US wins, you maintain the status quo.

We certainly no longer have any adults in place who could effectively respond to a crisis. We may just be on a long collapse that started when Covid cooked everyone's brains.

This sounds like a terrible "save the children" bill when what we need is a "burn the data centers" bill. Though strict age verification would probably have the same effect.

Hamas at least seems to have found the ceasefire useful for trying to salvage what it can of its own power. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the ceasefire fails and we fall back into Israel "mowing the lawn" occasionally while Hamas rules over the ruins and nothing gets better for Gazans.

However, we still don't know what will happen if it looks like Russia will lose the war. They haven't been in that position, and Ukraine's attacks inside Russia are only now leading to real economic bite. None of that translates to nuclear use, but Russia taking more risks isn't good.
