I think us humans enjoy sticking things in neat boxes a little too much. And people get very defensive over their favorite boxes. But most things are entirely more complex and we miss the beauty of it by being snobbish, I think.

So that’s my thing, too, regarding characterization. I love genre fiction- especially the speculative sort- because characterization, plot, etc is all considered vital to the story.

I read books that are clearly not literary and still fun as hell. But I LOVE books that are fun AND make me think.

And we are off to see the wizard!

Getting ready to head to the smoky mountains!

But people who menstruate, let’s discuss this bullshit.

Tell me why I start my period EVERY time we travel no matter when it *was* due.

Oh I know why. Because unlike some lucky folks whose periods hide during stress, mine panics & appears!

sidenote: My literary theory course I took was led with: What is Literature (with the capital L)?

That has stuck with me. Defining what is, therefore, literary is so complicated. Or has been? But I really think it’s just a style and not a genre. The Hobbit is fucking literary for goodness sake.
vanessaperrywrites.bsky.social
Yesss! I agree wholeheartedly. I think it’s more a style, too.

97% of my reading is speculative fiction. Many of the books I read are enjoyable because they’re simply fun. And that’s fine! But the stories that stick to my bones? They all lean literary. Or even ARE literary if talking about style!

Not to be snooty, but even if a book is bad, the act of reading is stimulating and requires more brain work than watching a movie or episode of television. So yes the worry about kids not reading is warranted.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

I have no friends that could give me a sourdough starter and that makes me sad because I think the giving of the sourdough starter is what makes it so cool!!!!

😭

All great books lean literary. And not because they TRY to, but because greatness demands depth. This absolutely includes great genre fiction.

Not all literary books are great, though. But we all know that.

Tragedy and Comedy: The Two Faces of Story Structure

If the protagonist is going to succeed, then you want to bring them closer and closer to failure. If they are going to fail, you want to bring them closer and closer to victory.

I do this, too! And that’s why I have a million book reviews to write. I actually feel so guilty- especially for the indie books that might really need an awesome review to boost it. 😬

I love that! I also love knives. 😆

What a cool question!

Ellyrie would not use it.

Agwe would! He’s a fun, flirty wholesome guy who is well-traveled. So, he’d probably post memes and pictures of friends and cool places. He’d be a very positive presence!

His profile pic would be him and the (pirate) crew.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

For the sake of this hypothetical, your characters have social media in their world.

Do they use it? What kind of things are they posting about? Pictures, video, or text? What do they have as a profile pic?

Flat ironed my hair for the first time in like 2-3 years and startled my husband when he got home 🤣🤣

*Even having hired her 4 times before already and knowing she’s not judgmental and I’m technically out of her usual area she works.

But OBVIOUSLY I must panic-clean even if my house isn’t that bad.

Someone stop me from this madness.
vanessaperrywrites.bsky.social
She does! She’s a pirate captain so the forced proximity to others + having to actually be collaborative etc causes her to become close to others. There’s also magic at play, too.

When she was just a pirate crew member, she basically did as she was told and isolated herself however she could.

I’ve trapped my husband into 15 years of *this* and he’s still not converted. 🤣🤣

Though, at least he sticks around. Not too long ago, someone told me, after an accumulative 2 hours together, “UR WEIRD BYE”. So that says something. 😂😂
