Rene Magritte (1898-1967) was a Belgium surrealist who did not become famous until his 50's. Title: Golconda
Although the title is widely known as a city in India, it had a different meaning or slang in Magritte's time. It referred to wealth and/or abundance.

Although he became well known by his hobby of painting, French artist Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) worked in what was known as a primitive style. His day job was as a tax collector!

I've been many times (my now husband is from London) and love it. Btw, I was accepted to the Courtauld Institute to study conservation. In the end I couldn't finance it and studied in Italy.

Im so glad the Getty Museums survived last years fires 💜. They are a gift to CA & the world. Seeing this post reminded me of a documentary of his work that was haunting & meditative.

I'm a fan of English painter #JohnWilliamWaterhouse (1849-1917) because his work is realistic but not hyperreal. He was an Academic painter that became part of the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood for their subject matter of strong women with mythological origins. This oil is called Boreas.
