"In all the world, there neither was nor would ever be another place like this City of the Angels," #CareyMcWilliams.

Spent the last 4 days at @urbanhistorya.bsky.social's conference at the historic Biltmore Hotel. Still processing all the wonderful Los Angeles history research shared @ #UHA2025LA.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

“[T]here remains much more work to be done to decipher and expose how the workscapes and necroscapes borne from the production of artificial light affected people, animals, cities, and environments together, in tandem.”

As #UHA2025LA kicks off, I’m happy to share here my most recent piece on the Metropole, on an understudied topic in #urbanhistory #envhist —how different lighting tech’s have affected birds & humans over the centuries & what we can do about it.

It’s a dual exposé & call to action Check it out here:
urbanhistorya.bsky.social
"Urban historians have written much about technological and social change in cities and very little about the ways in which historical transformations in lighting technologies have affected environments and ecologies, and the habitats and health of birds." from @charlotte-leib.bsky.social

It ended with @elsadevienne.bsky.social sharing key insights from #SandRush on the cultural & #envhist of LA's #beaches. Check out the award-winning books *Sand Rush* & *Living the California Dream* to learn more! global.oup.com/academic/pro... uk.linkedin.com/in/elsa-devi... alisonrosejefferson.com

Echoing that thanks!

A terrific tour + chance to talk more about race, recreation + landscape history not only with @elsadevienne.bsky.social, learning from her new pub * #SandRush *, but also @lawrencecphd.bsky.social, whose first book *The Frontier of Leisure* examines these themes, too! #envhist

Artist #AprilBanks also discussed community process that drove the development of "A Resurrection in Four Stanzas," the red skeleton of a house pictured, that celebrates the California Dream that many Black people achieved here in Belmar & had taken away from them. www.aprilbanks.com/aresurrectio...

historians: food4thought—have the panels at #UHA2025LA exemplified the validity of the below claim?
Or have they revealed it as a promising but unreachable fallacy?

➡️In other words “can we start over?”A key Q to consider given the complexity of what it means to renew or begin again in #urban env’s
Mural with a palm tree and sun against an ocean backdrop with graffiti reads “we can start over” on an urban street
