This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

Here is my best guidance, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons nearly nine years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century."

Beauty is happening no AI. Just lovely things
But time is running out, and the question remains:

Is America still crazy enough to save itself?

Or is it too far gone, a deranged junkie hurtling toward the inevitable crash?"
And yet, amidst the chaos, there’s still a pulse—faint, erratic, but stubborn. The same savage spirit that built this madhouse might yet find a way to rebuild it.
Truth has become a commodity, reality a matter of opinion, and the American psyche is stretched so thin it threatens to snap at any moment.
The weather turns biblical—fire, flood, plague—and yet half the country insists it’s all a hoax, a marketing gimmick to sell more electric cars. The other half drowns in existential dread, paralyzed by the sheer scope of the collapse.
Meanwhile, the rich hoard their billions like dragons atop mountains of untaxed gold, and the working class fights over scraps, too distracted by culture war theatrics to realize they’re all getting screwed by the same machine.
The institutions—courts, Congress, the press—have been hollowed out, their legitimacy pawned for short-term gains.
The political landscape is a grotesque carnival, a rotating freak show of grifters and zealots, all jostling for power while the audience, half-drunk on rage, cheers and jeers from the stands.
The country is high on its own supply of misinformation, mainlining paranoia through the veins of the internet, while a dwindling middle class clings to the last shreds of the American illusion—home ownership, dignity, a future.
The dream, once a glistening neon promise, now flickers like a busted Vegas sign, half-lit and buzzing with the dull hum of betrayal.
"The great American experiment teeters on the edge, a bloated, thrashing beast riddled with self-inflicted wounds, staggering under the weight of its own contradictions.
I asked ChatGPT to describe the current state of America from Hunter S. Thompson's point of view if he was alive, and it nailed it... 🧵
