“The waning of public support for the president was on open view when his birthday para— sorry, the U.S. Army 250th Anniversary Parade — marched through Washington this weekend to sparse crowds. Even against the baseline of an ordinary summer day of tourism … [the streets] looked notably deserted.”
“The Trump Organization [promises that a] gold-encased smartphone … will be manufactured in the U.S. Through a host of schemes — from a crypto company … to the marketing of Bibles embossed with Trump’s signature — the president has raked in a federally disclosed income of $600M since January.”
"The baseline set by the House version of the bill would cause 16 million people to lose their health coverage, but the Senate reportedly plans to clamp down further. … It’s another brick in the wall of evidence that the Republican plan will reward the wealthiest people in America at our expense."
We're out today with a look at a spectacular weekend of protests, as well as the president's not-so-spectacular Army parade — along with thoughts on the headlines and the latest on Trump's big, beautiful bill. Gather ’round: ↘️
June 17: A Day of Defiance
Millions hit the streets last Saturday to protest Trump, the president’s tank parade ended up as a fizzle — and a note about the future of this newsletter

Los Angeles says they'll never surrender to tyranny. They reject the Trump regime and his loyalist ICE forces.

Thousands upon thousands took to the streets against the Trump regime and its fascism. #3E #NoKings #NoKingsDay

A veteran who fought for our freedoms.

A mother with two toddlers who wants to see them enjoy those same freedoms.

A former Republican county committee member who values country over party.

Just three of the thousands of Americans who showed up proudly for the No Kings protests in Troy, Michigan.

"A quick reminder: The version of the Republican ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ passed by the House would commit more than $150 billion of new funding to immigration enforcement — and indications are that the Senate may make the pot of new money for ICE and other Homeland Security agencies even larger."
"As an agency assigned its disaster-response role by Congress … FEMA *should* require congressional approval to wind down. As for Trump’s aspiration to directly handle the handing out of disaster aid … it’s a red flag, given Trump's record of seeking bribes and payoffs in return for federal favors."
"Deploying the National Guard? Unpopular. Deploying the Marines? Unpopular. Building a mass-deportation machine? Unpopular. … The President himself? Unpopular. Trump’s net job approval rating, according to the latest poll by the Associated Press, has sunk to -21 percent."
On this hectic Thursday, we're out with some thoughts on how to process the scene in the City of Angeles — along with a rundown of the slew of nonsense from the Trump administration in recent days.
A Presidency in La-La Land
A primer on the president’s unpopular stunt in California, Trump hopes to bid adieu to FEMA and scientific review of vaccines — plus, at the top, a reminder about upcoming Saturday protests

Years ago, I made a tester account for this kind of thing. It is following only @NBA and nothing else. It has never posted or interacted with a single tweet.

I just logged on to it. Here’s what the algorithm showed me as I scrolled for 30 seconds.
Exactly. 🎯
Everything was fine until Trump decided to unleash violent raids w/o grounds in elementary schools, shopping areas, & peaceful public spaces.

ICE then illegally blocked Members of Congress entry into the facilities they are disappearing people into, escalating the situation.

Let’s start there.
“Like Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., before it, the Los Angeles of the MAGA cinematic universe now lies ‘completely obliterated.’ … What Americans see in recent news clips from L.A. is what it means to have a federal government that bases policies on make-believe — and the harm that [results].”
Today, we’re live from sunny Los Angeles, where … nothing is happening? Except where, as you may have heard, the Trump administration and immigration agencies have opted to stir s***.
ICE-y Times in Los Angeles
After deportation raids spark protests in a placid Southern California, the White House escalates by mobilizing troops. (Also, at the end: a summer song)

"As for whether 'DOGE' is actually fighting fraud, or just building a surveillance dragnet, we still have no way to be sure — thanks, again, to the Supreme Court … [which continues] to shield 'DOGE' from having to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request for documents on its operations."
"While Musk feuds with Trump on social media, officials in the administration are cleaning up a problem he left behind: 'DOGE' fired too many people. Even ex-workers for USAID … have received messages 'from former colleagues about potential new jobs at the State Department.'"
Whew, there's nothing like a good fight — but while Elon and Donald fume after their scrap the other day, we're looking at the damage that Musk left behind in the federal government.
June 8: The Boys Are Fighting!
Trump and former sidekick Elon Musk have a messy social-media breakup; whoops, Musk fired too many people; plus, a joke about five words we never see in a headline
