Who she is and the skilled artist that painted her is unknown. She was living in Egypt during the #Roman period & her hairstyle dates her to cAD160-170. She is shown with a beautiful necklace (painted in gold leaf) and earrings - Fayum portrait - @British Museum

Hermitage Castle guards Liddesdale, the “bloodiest valley in Britain".

Lucky for the resident Redcap demon who stalks it! It requires fresh blood drained from lone visitors to dye his cap. Have you braved it solo and lived to tell the tale?

The #Augustalia was held #OTD 12 Oct in honour of the #Emperor Augustus at the end of the Ludi Augusta's. First celebrated in 19BC, to mark his return from Asia Minor. Festivals were usually held to honour gods & goddesses so this indicated #Augustus was of divine status.

Harry the Roman is at Corinium Dobunnorum, once the second largest town in Roman Britain. Its mosaics blend Roman & Celtic artistry. Carvings of the Matres & Genii Cucullati hint at a rich mix of beliefs.
“Cirencester — a true meeting of worlds,” Harry said.

#InternationalDayoftheGirl
In Ancient #Rome #girls faced many limits — little access to education, early marriage, no political voice. Yet some women owned property, led estates, & held power. The #Vestal Virgins, held unique status & privileges, though bound by strict vows.

How ‘green’ were the ancient Romans? 🌿
Not very! Urban growth meant deforestation, smoky air (Seneca even complained in 61 CE), & tired soil. But they did recycle glass ♻️ and built homes to catch the winter sun 🌞 — a few sustainable sparks in a smoky world!

#OnThisDay the #Romans marked Mundus Patet — “the earth is open.” On Oct 5, the gateway to the underworld was said to open, letting spirits walk among the living. Like a Roman #Halloween, it was a sacred day: no battles, no business, no marriages. 🏛️👻
