The new science PhDs get to wear wild-looking top hats while humanities and social science people get actual laurel wreaths made by a specialized florist in town. Then we also get huge diplomas written by a calligrapher with our names Latinized (they're in Latin).

You should see the annual doctoral conferment ceremony, where the chancellor puts on a huge gold chain, there are heralds with staffs, vintage artillery guns firing salutes for hours and a 3-4 hour long ceremony in the cathedral, all in Latin.

Since I was looking for an excuse to procrastinate, I went down and took a picture of the nailing wall for you (these are some of the more recent ones, my own has been taken down since it was too long ago, there's finite space on the wall). Note the thick iron nails.

We're in a bit of a budget squeeze right now, but back in the day we always had real champagne and French pastries (macarons) for nailing ceremonies.

There were leftovers in the break room at work from the nailing ceremony earlier today (where a PhD student nails her printed dissertation to the wall and the supervisor officially announces the date of the upcoming defense), so now I can drink non-alcoholic sparkling wine with my falafel.

No, for Australia it makes perfect sense to not have a system designed for heating over prolonged periods of time. It's the UK and the cooler areas of the US (where they have temperatures that are close to what we get here) where I think they could benefit from having this sort of stuff.

This is like the bizarre discourse on heat pumps I see now and then from the US and UK. They talk about it like it's new and unproven technology, when it's been ubiquitous here in the Nordics since the early 1990s.

I've got a heat pump connected to a larger unit that heats water for both the radiators and tap water (in separate isolated systems). It's connected to temperature sensors outside and in the house, and adjusts everything automatically all year round. It's never turned off (except for maintenance).

Seeing these posts about people turning their heating on is a another reminder that home heating tech we take for granted in the Nordics is apparently sci-fi in other parts of the world. My heating system is 15 years old, but still perfectly capable of managing everything automatically.

Tack vare @staffand.bsky.social, vår man på kontinenten, har jag nu upptäckt uttrycket "vapoteur", dvs. en person som nyttjar vape. Detta bör omedelbart importeras som låneord, förslagsvis med stavningen vapotör. Funkar även i plural: vapotörer.

I have great hopes for a new project I've come up with, a fairly technical one where I want to see if I can work with digital forensics tools to set up an early warning system capable of detecting biometrics data that has been collected for malicious purposes.

Having gone through the research budget situation for next year, it was a great relief to find that there was more money left than I had dared hope. This means I've got a good deal of research time next year as well covered. Now I just have to submit next application next spring to cover 2027...
