BREAKING:

NBC News projects: Prop 50 Congressional Redistricting has been approved.
Oh, I’m so glad you enjoyed. It’s one of my favorites. Love Odets’ poetic, metaphor-laden street talk. And it’s got one of my favorite opening lines in filmdom, when Lola Lane rises from a drunken sleep to greet an unwelcome visitor at the door: “Why, it’s Sleepy Parsons. Aren’t you dead yet?” 😅

I was going to say the same thing – qualifying it, like you, with “might.” 😅 But there’s something about this film that – while as skillful and slick as Curtiz’s best – has an unforced quality that’s rarer for him, as if he’s confident enough not to hold on so tight. And that final shot – holy crap.
Rising up, up, and away! THE BREAKING POINT is masterful. (Didn’t Hemingway call it the best adaptation of any of his novels? I know Garfield felt it boasted his best performance.)
My mother, born in 1927, could recite whole scenes from FOUR DAUGHTERS. I suspect she only saw the film once, in 1938, but John Garfield made such a lasting impression on her that she retained it all vividly 60 and 70 years later. It’s hard to convey what an absolute original he was at the time.
I so agree. As I look down this #NoirvemberChallenge, I suspect I’m going to be invoking his name more than any other actor.
I saw this in the ‘70s, and really need to revisit. Adding it to my list, and I thank you. 😊 Is this the one (SPOILER) where Agnes Moorehead makes her big exit through a plate-glass window? I think that’s all I remember. 😅
Thanks. I had trouble with this category, then this film came to mind last night, and it felt perfect. The way wealth used to be associated with philanthropy, whereas now it’s all about the accumulation of *more* wealth. 🤷‍♂️
Such a brilliant – and timely – choice. 👏👏
Day 4 #NoirvemberChallenge
#FilmNoir Ahead of Its Time

FORCE OF EVIL, Abraham Polonsky’s exposé of the corrupting nature of capitalism. John Garfield – too weak to resist corruption, yet strong enough to fight for his share – is every modern-day magnate building his fortune on the backs of others.
You really can’t. “His spirit will live forever“ – said about Bernie(!!!) – was probably the best laugh I’ve had today. I would thank this Rob guy personally, but darn, I’ve already blocked him. 🤷‍♂️
I confess, I’ve never heard of it, but I’m putting it on my list, and I thank you. Sounds like it might be perfect for this week’s Saturday night movie. 😊

I was laid off from Teen Vogue this week, alongside multiple other phenomenal team members.

At our Summit, I was asked how it felt to be 1 of 2 Black women left and what that meant for representation. Now, there are no Black women at Teen Vogue and that is incredibly painful to think about.
Day 3 #NoirvemberChallenge
The #FilmNoir That Made You a Fan

In the late ‘70s, THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS had gone into public domain, and the Late Late Show started airing it regularly. I didn’t identify it as film noir, as the term hadn’t gone mainstream yet; I just knew I loved this movie.
Oh, I love this movie, but have never seen a decent print. Thanks so much for the tip!
I cannot be the only person who has this GIF in their photo album, can I? 🤷‍♂️😅
Oh, I’m so thrilled to know what’s coming up. Obviously, all great films, but I confess I’m especially tickled by the inclusion of Larceny, which I’ve always found one of the funniest – and most quotable – of noirs. Looking so forward to seeing it again with you all. 😊
“We are where we are,” Clooney concludes, neglecting to add, “And fortunately, Amal and I enjoy such wealth and privilege that we are now in France.” 😡
If anyone needs to go away it’s this mfer
As eternal champion of lost causes, I will stand up for sprouts. For health reasons, I include sprouts on my dinner menu practically every day of the week. I wouldn’t say they’ve become my favorite food, but I quite enjoy them. 😊
Oh Lord, I guess I haven’t been paying attention. BlueSky is adding a “dislike” button?
I think that’s one of those annoying things you can always count on, like how it always rains the minute you finish washing your car. 🤷‍♂️
