Hi followers. In case you thought I was JUST a shitposter, I'm a historian, trained as a medievalist and working on the long eighteenth century, a college professor, and also for the last six years I've been writing about the far right. Primarily the religious far right, but not exclusively.

You know what's really fun, in a classroom, as someone who started as a theatre major? Delivering an eighteenth century sermon as a performance piece to a colonial American history class.

But mostly, this week? I really, really, really love my students.

I love my students, and I love teaching, and I love being an academic, like my father before me, and I desperately wish the job was mostly teaching and research and less dodging anvils from above or filling out reports. So it goes.

One of the things that Chairman Tahdooahnippah and I both wanted to talk about was how to do ethical scholarship with Tribes. So if you’re interested in those thoughts or feel that your students could hear them, check out the current episode of Reckoning with Jason Herbert below.

He was just a man. He was flawed. He left me with traumas like so many parents do. And I loved him with all my heart and I would give anything to be able to pick up the phone and call him tonight.

When I was in high school, he took me with him on these trips he was organizing for CUNY faculty to Russia and China, and took extra days afterwards to show me more cities. We had private jokes and favorite places in countries around the world and memories that were just ours. He gave me the
world.

What’s ONE green flag about your father?

This. Very much this. Yes.

My dad was a production cook, not a weeknight cook, but I remember the things he made so vividly. Tonight I made a version of my favorite thing he'd cook for me, and it turned out well, and I am both so profoundly sad--I miss him do much--and so incredibly happy that I could recreate my childhood.

My dad made these spicy Indian lamb meatballs that were my favorite birthday request. My mom and sister came up, because sitting in an empty house is hard, and I need a task, so... trying a baby version of it tonight.

Oh God y'all it tasted like my childhood, I broke down and cried at the dinner table, for a moment I felt my dad with me so strongly. I wish more than anything in the world I could call him tonight and tell him I made these.

Thank you, I appreciate you.

It's not that random. My dad was always so proud when I got invited to give a talk.

( @secularaz.bsky.social you have dibs if you want me to reschedule--thank you so much for understanding, the end was even faster and more shocking than expected)

Random thought: I've bought out my teaching load in the spring. If anyone I know is interested in me presenting some part of my work (vast early America, contemporary religion & politics, game studies, I guess medieval America) for their uni or school or organization, I'd love to talk to you.
