I love my students, and I love teaching, and I love being an academic, like my father before me, and I desperately wish the job was mostly teaching and research and less dodging anvils from above or filling out reports. So it goes.

When I was in high school, he took me with him on these trips he was organizing for CUNY faculty to Russia and China, and took extra days afterwards to show me more cities. We had private jokes and favorite places in countries around the world and memories that were just ours. He gave me the
world.

My dad was a production cook, not a weeknight cook, but I remember the things he made so vividly. Tonight I made a version of my favorite thing he'd cook for me, and it turned out well, and I am both so profoundly sad--I miss him do much--and so incredibly happy that I could recreate my childhood.

My dad made these spicy Indian lamb meatballs that were my favorite birthday request. My mom and sister came up, because sitting in an empty house is hard, and I need a task, so... trying a baby version of it tonight.

Oh God y'all it tasted like my childhood, I broke down and cried at the dinner table, for a moment I felt my dad with me so strongly. I wish more than anything in the world I could call him tonight and tell him I made these.
