Reminds me of Mappelthorpe's 1970s photo "Mark Stevens (Mr. 10Β½)
Robert Mapplethorpe's 1976 photograph Mark Stevens (Mr. 10 Β½) features Marc Stevens, a gay porn star and pioneering figure in the New York City sex industry during the 1970s, who was known for his well-defined physique and the nickname "10Β½" due to the size of his circumcised penis. In the image, Stevens is depicted wearing black leather chaps, his body arched over a tall granite podium with his chest and arms flexed to balance his upper body, and his penis resting directly on the podium, positioned at the center of the frame. Mapplethorpe carefully cropped the image at the torso, ensuring Stevens's face is not visible, and presented the subject as a sculptural form, elevating the male body to the status of classical art. The photograph exemplifies Mapplethorpe's formalist approach, where he sought "perfections in form" and aimed to capture subjects as if they were sculpture, regardless of whether the subject was a portrait, flower, or male genitalia.
