Oligarchy would be easier to take if billionaires weren’t so easily conned by obvious bullshit artists. John Oliver on the instructive example of Bari Weiss.

Since 2009 Congress has denied itself any raises, reducing after-inflation pay by one-third, for fear of public backlash. But where was the backlash when Republican members voted in a tax cut greatly increasing take-home pay for the wealthier among them? My latest.

The House Republicans Getting Rich Off Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill
Why is it taboo for Congress to give itself a tiny raise but fine for it to give itself a huge tax cut?

Next month will mark the 20th anniversary of the posthumous publication—to uniform raves—of “The Woman at the Washington Zoo,” the first of two anthologies of writings by my late first wife, Marjorie Williams. I’m gratified to see both it and “Reputation,” its sequel, are still in print.

It's official:

-2025 is now a more threatening year for the survival of the republic than 1968.

-John Roberts will now go down in history as a worse chief justice than Roger "Dred Scott" Taney.

I agree, but CSIS looked well beyond that to recorded instances of literal physical violence. There has been a surge on the left. It doesn’t help pretending there hasn’t. I think Trump provokes it and is trying to provoke more.

Nowhere do I say left-wing violence is less serious. I say it’s less lethal based on body count. I state that violence is morally wrong, as any sensible person would. But according to the CSIS study, it has increased since Trump appeared on the political scene, and in normal times it’s rare.

My latest: How Trump successfully provoked, over 10 years, an uptick in left-wing violence; how he’s now trying to provoke more (thus far, thank God, unsuccessfully); and how he’s using it to justify a crackdown on political dissent more sweeping than COINTELPRO.

The good news is that Schwarzman got Trump to back off on saddling Harvard with a government monitor. The bad news is that Harvard is changing its name to Schwarzman University.

The WPA murals are a vital part of our nation’s artistic history, and to the extent that they can remain public, they should!

Nobody else is writing about this, so please re-post my two-part series about the imminent sale of what one expert calls “the Sistine Chapel of New Deal art.” Preservationists need to move fast.

This weekend is a good time to catch up on my stories about Trump’s imminent sale and likely destruction of a 1940 government building that one expert calls “the Sistine Chapel of New Deal art.”
