There is a related species, Pemphigus protospirae, that makes similar but longer spiral galls (influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Pemp...) I wonder if that is the specific one and people have confused the two. It’s rarer - I’ve not found it yet.

Ah, thanks! - pity! Admittedly, I’ve seen them on Lombardy poplar too … but I find them rather easier to identify!

This is the "grandparent" Yew at Kingley Vale NNR with its two generations of layered "children" and "grandchildren" yews. The ancient yews of the famous Yew Grove have mostly reproduced by vegetative layering; but the Yews covering the downs on the scarp slopes seem seeds propagated. .
