Chris here explains my thoughts on reference and tracing pretty clearly in a long thread. Take pics of yourself. Ask friends to pose. Frankenstein photos together. TRACE! Because it's valid and you learn a ton from doing it.

First loose sketch over a photo of me posing with a knife, leg up. A bunch of other photos are arranged at the bottom, of me taking similar poses (I cut and paste the parts of my body I liked most from each photo to create the final larger mockup)

Final piece. A black-furred anthropomorphic wolf stands defensively on one leg while holding up an obsidian-bladed dagger. He is standing by the water, seemingly practicing the pose with no enemies in front of him. He is wearing a colorful lamellar armor of plates and tassels of striking blues, greens, and purples.

I feel like I definitely struggle with methods (doing one stitch on a whole row then doubling back vs one by one) but at this point I'm just doing my best to get through at least one before worrying about perfect. 💪
