Walworth Road (1930)

This view looks north along the Walworth Road towards the ornate Elephant and Castle public house.

Most of the buildings here were demolished as part of the London County Council redevelopment between 1958 and 1965.

Speaker’s Corner, April 1987

Speakers here at this corner of Hyde Park nearest of Marble Arch may talk on any subject, as long as the police consider their speeches lawful.

Map of Notting Hill c.1840

A rare map of Notting Hill in that it shows the extremely short-lived Hippodrome racecourse. This would now be situated on the west side of Ladbroke Grove, with the summit shown on the old map at the later site of St John’s Church

Before zebra crossings were invented, other mammal-based crossing ideas were trialled. The inflatable giraffe crossing certainly aided visibility but never really caught on

Lancing Terrace, Lower Richmond Road, Mortlake (1906)

Looking west from brewery entrance; the cottages on the right were Bellevue Terrace; Houses with the bays were Lancing Terrace.

The expansion of the Stag Brewery caused the demolished of both.
