We need mandatory repairability, long-term software support, and strong #RighttoRepair laws. Recycling isn’t enough; the Circular Economy Act must prioritise reuse and repair.

🔜 Beyond laptops, we need ecodesign requirements securing software and security updates for the full technical lifespan of all products with a plug or a battery

📢 This is why current legislation falls short:

- Ecodesign rules secure 5 years of updates, but only for #smartphones & tablets
- Demanding that updates be “as long as it can be reasonably expected” is vague and unenforceable
- Cybersecurity rules leave loopholes for “short-lived” devices

❌ Clearly, the E-waste won’t be solved by corporate goodwill.

Corporate promises and temporary fixes won’t cut it. We shouldn’t have to fight company by company, device by device. We need strong, enforceable laws to guarantee long-term software support.

There are currently too many barriers to repair and reuse. We need the government to make it a priority that repair is accessible and affordable, and that reusing our resources instead of wasting them becomes the norm.

That’s why we have reissued a joint letter to Emma Reynolds, reflecting the support of 40 businesses, NGOs and networks, for policies put forward in the #RepairReuseDeclaration. ⁠
