FWIW: over the years I have tried #DuckDuckGo as default search engine, but have always caved and gone back to the Big One.
But this time I'll stick with the Duck. Why?
Because although it offers AI "services", it also makes it *extremely* easy to turn the bloody stuff completely off.
I recommend
When I lived there it was called Quay Street and it was utterly derelict except for tiny versions of the Quays and Tigh Neachtán pubs and a used bookshop.
Hi Conor. Interesting piece, but I have a question: you write that the Georgian operation made €30.5 million from 6,179 'clients'. I make that as just under 5k per scam - which is a pittance for the work put in and certainly wouldn't cover wages of €17k a month. Am I missing something?

I endorse this entirely.

And yet. As a sort of historian myself, I can't help but point out that, although bad times do end, the period between one bad time ending and the next bad time beginning is always significantly shorter than either of the bad times it separates.

Sleep well.
As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

In the next episode of everyone’s favourite podcast, Radio Myles, Maebh Murphy presents a compilation of voices and atmospheres, scholarly ideas and craic agus ceol from the 8th International Flann O'Brien conference in Strabane. It’s a knockout episode so get those headphones on agus éisigí anseo!

That was excellent, I have rarely heard John be so open and relaxed. Thanks.
Many thanks, that worked.
Thanks, I'll see if I can find it. BBC Sounds no longer works here.
There are embers in the bedwarmer early in Banville's novel.
That's me sorted for a couple of days.

Actually, the reviews have been a bit difficult to interpret - but, sure, we'll see.

That's my week ruined.

News editor: What will we use to illustrate this story about Ray D'Arcy getting sacked?
Sub: How about this ten-year-old picture?
Cheever was - and probably still is - one of my "heroes". His "Letters" is fascinating, as is a fine biography by Scott Donaldson (there's probably been more recent scholarship I'm unaware of). I really look forward to reading this.
@brianmcguinness.bsky.social You probably know Morgan. Be sure to catch this.
Quite simply superb. Morgan Jones tells the story of the Shields brothers, from Portobello to the GPO to Hollywood. It's only an hour, but Morgan should add 40 minutes and it would transfer to Off Broadway. Don't miss it.

If you are still on Twitter, please copy this and post it - spread the word.

I once saw her glance knowingly and smile while walking past the Masonic Lodge on Molesworth Street.
Architectural archive? Manuscripts commission?
Just changed the battery in my car key fob and feel like I have single-handedly led a successful mission to land a man on the moon.
Those boots look pretty Cavalier to me.
