🧪 Diagnosis isn’t simple. It requires access to specialized lab testing, something many low-resource countries lack.
⚠️ Without treatment, 35% of people with PNH die within 5 years. That’s over one-third--a devastating statistic for a disease that is treatable.
themaxfoundation.org
PNH is a rare, life-threatening blood disorder that often strikes in the prime of life; the average age at diagnosis is 35–40.

Last year we partnered with IPIG to improve outcomes for patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). IPIG has provided medical education and training on PNH care and management.

Sunita is a 35-year-old housewife who lives in Bhutan with her husband and 14-year-old son. When Sunita first felt a lump in her breast, she didn’t think much of it. On February 12, though, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, leaving her and her family feeling helpless.

After all the years of treatment and struggle, she was not only healthy enough to dream about the future—she was living it. This was a woman who, at one point, couldn’t imagine tomorrow. Now, she was preparing to welcome new life.

🤰🏼What is a special memory you have with patients?

It was late at night when I received a message that I’ll never forget. It came from an incredibly strong woman from Armenia who lives with chronic myeloid leukemia, someone we had been supporting through the Max program.

I would be a monkey because they are curious, intelligent, and playful. I admire how they adapt quickly to new situations and enjoy connecting with others.

In countries where cancer care is centralized, families often face heartbreaking choices to get to a hospital. That’s why programs that provide holistic support like transportation vouchers matter. They help cover basic costs so patients like Mary don’t have to choose between treatment and survival.
