Families suck sometimes, I'm sorry people are out here killing trees trying to harsh your light.

This bit. Putting all this effort into hurting your feelings is weird as shit. Honestly why. Why would anyone bother.

I feel like most people I know who overconsume liquid meals are unsurprisingly people drinking a liquid dinner because there's no money for a personal chef and their medically approved diet is fucking expensive

Right? Also, if people are going to say nobody needs protein supplementation and then tells me to eat twice the amount of protein I get a day because I don't eat meat 3-6 times a day for health reasons... what do they want me to eat???

I so far have a 100% success rate at telling people they meet enough screening criteria for hEDS that should go pursue a diagnosis, it's still surprising to me now commonly I see it.

There's plenty of good literature about how people end up doing bad things, it's not like it's impossible to write morally conflicted people in interesting and insightful ways, but when somebody's whole literary career is capeing for sleezebucket heroes I think we're allowed to notice it.

I also went through this for years until someone said to me "actually, good people do not struggle with sincerely wanting to do evil things, that's what bad people say to cover up their abuses" and it really changed how I read. Really really changed it.

I wish we as a culture could talk about what those things might mean as trends in a long ouvre, especially in very popular or well loved works. If every part of it was equally yikes people probably wouldn't read it! But we're very bad at having public discussions of this stuff.

Today I ate from my stock of "oh GD I'm flaring" buckwheat English muffins instead of my usual, less chewy breakfasts, and I hate eating food that feels like doing a chore, but we make the best choices we can under capitalism, okay? There's no winning. Eat what you can.

People rag on diet food and I agree, let's rag on it when they're loopholing through being supplements, but rice flour products also contains large risks for being exposed to lead and arsenic. I was eating these BECAUSE they're not rice based 🫠

Some writers grew out of it, and will say so (Tamora Pierce comes to mind), or admit to bowing to outside or editorial pressure (some debuts, I've heard this multiple times THIS DECADE) but plenty of folks out here are still using SA as a punishment or minimize DV or do a truly unnecessary racism

Generally I think we have worked a little too hard at killing the author and pretending stories can exist outside of the person who told them, like writers can rise above their own deepest held beliefs to deliver stories free from everything that makes a writer unique and potentially interesting.
thelionmachine.bsky.social
I think many people are much worse at keeping writers like Lovecraft or Georgette Heyer at an emotional distance than they think they are, and going in saying "this is about racism, I am reading how Lovecraft thinks" is much easier than thinking you're gonna get something separate from the creator.

My actual hottest take is that lots of successful women writers have the same huge weird flags in their work that people notice if a man wrote something similar, and people keep telling each other to just read around the problematic bits and maybe we should talk about it instead of ignoring it.

This is one of the most important consumer reports you'll read today. Following up on this I found out the protein doughnuts I've been relying on bc their ingredients don't trigger my MCAS are owned by a company sued multiple times in CA for not disclosing lead exposure 🫠

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

"sure, X is a misogynistic racist character but that's just a trope, you're supposed to dislike them"

It's not that it's got racism in it it's the ways it is casually and systemically racist and how the narrative punishes and demeans women but I am sure this guy is a feminist, they always are.

My actual take about literature that will get me excommunicated is that sometimes you absolutely CAN tell somebody is a horrible abusive fuckhead in their writing, but the big tells are things about racism, sexism, abuse, consent, gender, etc that we're told to just ignore.

Why do I always "or not" twice in "whether or not" clauses. Why. I Always Do This.
thelionmachine.bsky.social
A lot of people do not actually read the book that you wrote, they read the book that they decided you wrote whether or not that's based on the words on the pages or not. There is nothing anyone can do to change this. It can happen to anybody on the wrong day.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Does she really have no friends who care about human rights in the UK? Is she actually unaware of politics there? Wild if true but I do encounter people like that in performing arts.
thelionmachine.bsky.social
It seems impossible to me, but I keep running into people, public figures, who clearly do NOT know. They don't read the news, they don't follow her on social media, they don't follow human rights issues, they do not let anything unpleasant into their thoughts. I really don't like that any better.

Happy birthday to Donna! I didn't realize we were birthday twins!
