I'm working with 2.9.0 this morning on a full tray experience app. I'll keep you posted.
I'm in the same boat and really looking forward to using this to contain pretty much the entire UX in the tray flyout

Yessss!!!! But no InkToolbar yet... so more of a return nothing new there yet.
Additionally, the model catalog will help filter which models are compatible with the Windows device it's running on, so that the right model is downloaded to the device.
