"When the whale awakes, it’s not sure if it’s a whale who dreamed itself a butterfly or a butterfly who dreamed itself a
whale."

I really love how @andrewbertaina.bsky.social created this gem in the @thedodgemag.bsky.social 💙💙💙

A true-ish story of war and fungal spread, INVASION FORCE tells of how Clathrus archeri, a fungus known as the Devil's Fingers, reached Europe from Aotearoa New Zealand in 1914. Out now in The Dodge!

Pictured: clathrus archeri growing near Bornheim, Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Clathrus archeri, a fungus known as the Devil's Fingers. Young exemplars develop in stone-grey sacs known as "witch eggs"; when they sprout each has four pink tonguelike fingers covered in black gleba to attract flies.

If you know me well, then you know I’m a sucker for a whale story, and this is a fabulous one.

Thanks to @thedodgemag.bsky.social and @addisonzeller.bsky.social for sharing my story "Two Dreams," rejected two different times explicitly for having talking animals. Like, literally, one of them was a just form and "no talking animals."

In wonderful company:

Blowing up @thedodgemag.bsky.social with a sick new child-endangerment exploitation story tomorrow/Wednesday. Real heads know what I'm talking about. It's basically flash fiction which I love to make fun of on here so hate-readers aren't gonna wanna miss this.

I'll stand by "I am tired of tidings," for the most part. But getting a message that @thedodgemag.bsky.social nominated "East of Eden" for the Best of the Net anthology, those were tidings that put some wind back in my sails. Thank you to the editors, especially @sambranopoet.bsky.social.

My first Best of the Net nomination, thanks to @thedodgemag.bsky.social
Field Pansy
My nectar wooed the laden bees tumbling
in the grass,

flagrant below the sun, every pistil
shuddering

as their busy legs brushed me with
fertile news

Now there is less in the air,
less show,

less reaching towards the other
So be it

Bunkered, self-contained, fed
rations

of the known, resilience burrows
each looped

gene, makes my descendants
pale duplicates

Hoarding and blameless, I drop
little pollen

in the world’s begging cup,
against present

and expected loss, unfold scant
shrunken blooms
