What's your favorite use of pre-existing classical music in a movie not directed by Stanley Kubrick?

Mine is probably "Hall of the Mountain King" from Fritz Lang's M, the main melody of which is whistled by the killer.

I grew up in a very religious rural town in Ontario and guys like this would sound like an asshole there to most people. We have our share of Jesus freaks who use their "faith" to justify terrible things, but it's all a bit quieter. It's in our politics but less extreme and explicit.

A director just spammed me a screener claiming he is “huge fan” of my letterboxd. Buddy, I respect the hustle, but no one is a huge fan of seeing the occasional two-reeler I remember to log without comment.

Geese are cool too. I’m a friend to geese. I take the kids to Lemoine Point all the time to hang out with them and the gulls. Usually there’s some swans and cormorants. A heron if you’re lucky. Instant mood lifter.

I think of the tail power up as letting you explore more than skip, even if the result is skipping. Some levels, particularly in world 2, have surprises in the sky that I’ll sometimes do, sometimes skip. Even after all these years it’s highly replayable. P wings let you fully skip but are rare.

SMB introduces ideas brilliantly. The levels are more concise. That’s a virtue. But there’s something to be said about a level that unfolds in surprising ways even if it’s messy. It’s narratively interesting.

I can’t argue that logic except to say that I value that slightly more open design. One of the reasons it’s still played so much is because it gives you room to mess around and try to break things. But there’s still a tight enough progression of ideas that it doesn’t meander. SMW is too loose.

My obsession silent film means the 20s is still probably my favourite decade, but Japan alone has a ridiculously stacked 30s silent film catalogue. My love of 30s sound film is much more focused on just Hollywood and Japan but I *really* love those movies. Other decades are a bit more international

I used to think the 20s were the best and that movies didn’t really get great again until like ‘39. I used to be a huge idiot. Top tier decade for sure.
