If someone says they're afraid, perhaps they are processing shame into something malignant, something more cruel and petty than you can ever imagine. Maybe they want blood to distract themselves from their own reflection.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
But they want to frame it as something more insidious. Something violent and dangerous. There has obviously been no threats to anyone over this law. But reaffirming their victimhood is key to avoiding the sense of shame they felt when the majority of their neighbors simply disagreed with them.

Business owners particularly were more supportive of the law. They made up two of the three supporters at the first town hall. But now they are afraid of what the liberals might do to their businesses if they speak out again. What is this veiled threat to business? Boycotts obviously.

Not only are we afraid of the homeless. We are now afraid to speak out. We are a silent majority you see. But we are terrified to speak up for ourselves because of what our neighbors might do to us. She invoked fear for her children. She invoked fear for their local businesses.

At the second town hall meeting fewer people attended. The ordinance was temporarily tabled. Still more opponents of the ordinance spoke out. They generally thanks the commissioners for tabling it. But the conservatives were back and they had a new talking point.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
But they could not ignore the hours of impassioned speeches advocating for the humanity of the poor, calling the law that they wanted cruel. What do you do in the face of such opposition? Most liberals think conservatives ignore it. I disagree. They react to it. That reaction is to double down.

Three people spoke in support of the law. These few were clearly the ones complaining night and day to the police. They claimed multiple instances of victimhood at the hands of a homeless menace the rest of the town was "blind to." They were desperate for victimhood, for pity.

Local faith leaders begged the commissioners to reject the law. People with personal experiences with homelessness spoke about the support they received from the community, the shame an anti camping law would have brought them if they had been arrested. A truly overwhelming display of compassion.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
A local town introduced an anti homeless ordinance. Specifically, one that is now allowed thanks to the Grants Pass decision. At the first public comment period an overwhelming majority of the town opposed the ordinance. Dozens of people entered comments calling the ordinance "cruel" and "immoral."

I have been thinking about the role shame plays for the radicalization of Republicans a lot lately too but in a very different way. I believe for some people, feeling shame causes them to further entrench into illiberal, authoritarian beliefs. This came from an experience at a local town hall.

"And yet Táíwò’s own position misses something fundamental about the world we now inhabit. Shame does not operate in a vacuum...today, the sturdy ground that once formed shame’s foundation has collapsed."

Why Shame No Longer Works in American Politics
While it once played a role in binding society, shame has lost its power—and so have the liberal tools that depend on it.

Pritzker was right to threaten state prosecution of federal officers breaking the law. But we haven't seen that. Making clear that we may have 0 law enforcement actually on the side of law and order against fascism. Something we all knew was likely but chilling to witness.

Such an interesting marketing failure. Photogs can easily create a payment structure that involves a slightly higher base price for photos, then propose to pay the subject for the right to share on social media. Ppl priced out can consider saving money by opting in. Shows respect for your customers.

TIL that photographers charge you more if you request that your photos aren’t used on their social media. Maybe I knew that? Or maybe it’s generally been included? Either way the price of 1980s privacy has definitely gone up

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

So many excellent arguments. A favorite: "The implications of these realities beckon us not to picture our own thoughts in the mind of a mushroom, but to open our imagination to how other species might perceive the world in ways we cannot conceive."

Take it from me: You do NOT negotiate with abusers.

So if Trump wants to illegally take New Jersey’s funding, we have to fight back with everything we’ve got.

My idea? Eminent domain Trump’s golf course for affordable housing.

My debut in @nydailynews:

Trump took Gateway money, we must take his golf club
Take it from someone who’s spent years as a survivor advocate, working with people hurt by those in power: You do not negotiate with abusers.

It may seem obvious but how people process shame is vital to understanding them. I think our social discourse has involved taking people at their word. The credulity of modern society is damaging. Maybe you can lay the blame on news outlets for modeling this behavior but don't adopt it.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Now the only way you can look yourself in the mirror is if you convince yourself that you are a victim. You are not just "afraid" of the other you wanted to harm with the law you were advocating, you are "afraid" of your neighbors who spoke out against it. Your fear is fake. You deserve disdain.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Then of course the majority of people around them simply said "we don't want this" and now they're "afraid to speak out." No, hun, you are not afraid. The feeling you are experiencing is shame. You feel ashamed because everyone told you what you wanted was cruel, immoral, wrong.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Specifically, they wanted a law that made them feel like their town was conforming to the ideological crusade that is fed to them by their echo chambers. Perhaps it convinced them that "the other" was a threat. Perhaps their fear was real in some sense, despite it being drummed up out of thin air.
