The Human Rights and Democracy movement has a 50 year history in Tonga, from an informal grouping in the 70s to an electoral movement in the 90s, and forming government in the 2010s.

In all seriousness, this is a very valuable project that absolutely should get the support of Oceanic socialists. Subscribe, read, contribute, disseminate!

In our opening editorial, we explain why Temokalati exists, the problems of socialist leadership in the struggle for democracy in the Pacific, and how socialism is necessary to establish a free, democratic, emancipated Pacific.

Thomas Sankara was killed in a coup led by his former ally on October 15th, 1987. This coup was supported by French colonial forces - and Muammar Gaddafi. Without a revolutionary socialist party with a Marxist program, opportunism wins, and 'liberationists' become scabs.

Tonga's youth vote matters, but in an anti-democratic system such as Tonga's, their vote can only go so far. This is why in November, Tongan youth must vote for democratic candidates. But Tongan youth must also mobilise for democratic rights and against the nobility.

We are very excited to republish some old documents from the Human Rights & Democracy Movement (Tonga), which give an insight into their liberal-bourgeois political orientation. Coming soon! In English and in Tongan.

Tonga's support for Israel is a black stain on the Pacific, and a sign of Dr. Eke's increasing desperation to cozy up to U.S. imperialists for paltry foreign aid. Tongan workers and toilers must support the Palestinians.

Today, the Human Rights and Democracy Movement is split between the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands, the People's Democratic Party, and the Tongan People's Party. We say: Tonga needs a socialist party!

Comrades & friends,

We issue this statement after recent events. Socialists must champion the democratic rights & liberties of LGBTQ+ workers in all countries.

Comrades & friends,

Find below our reply to King Tupou VI's Address from the Throne, where he calls for "greater accountability, integrity, and transparency".

Only one path to democracy in Tonga: republic! Only socialism can build such a democratic republic.

Key pro-demoracy reformers such as 'Akilisi Pohiva were charged with sedition over the riot, which they spoke out against at the time, but these charges were soon dropped.

Democratic reform in Tonga can only come by abolishing the monarchy and establishing a #republic.

AU/NZ imperialist forces were rapidly dispatched to support the royalist government. Here we see #NZ soldiers manning barricades on roads and guarding the Fua'amotu international airport. The prime concern from imperialists was the safety of tourists, capitalists and aristocrats.

People often overlook the #pacificislands and class struggle that takes place there. But in 2006, Tongan workers and toilers took to the streets demanding the democratic reforms that politicians had agitated for over decades prior. This culminated in a long, destructive riot.

A very promising project, in my opinion. I suggest giving them a follow and getting in touch, I certainly have.
