If you want to know the real me, then you need to know that at any given time, roughly 10% of my processing power is revving on the subject of quilts and quilting. I typically have multiple projects in various states of completion. Here's a sampling of quilts I've finished over the past few years.

This is just one snippet among many I could've pulled from this powerful piece by Catherine Jue: www.catherinejue.com/fast
Quote from Catherine Jue: "Fast eliminates cognitive friction. Raycast surfacing the right application before you finish typing feels like an extension of your mind. Superhuman's sub-100ms rule — plus their focus on keyboard shortcuts — changed the email game in a way that no one's been able to replicate, let alone beat... No one praises these tools explicitly for their speed. They just feel magical."

Every kid who knows how to take responsibility for their part in a situation — and who knows how to apologize with grace and dignity — learned that from a loving adult in their life. You’re doing great. 💕

“I feel like web developers are constantly being gaslit into thinking that complex over-engineered solutions are the only option. […] That’s not good for users, and I don’t think it’s good for us either.”

Excessive JS is a UX monster. It hurts important metrics like LCP and INP, which in turn hurts bounce rate and conversion rate.

I dug into this topic in a recent post, where I compared the #webperf of landing pages for well-known sites, from Apple to Uber.

I've been exploring @speedcurve.com's new Vitals Overview dashboard with some customers for a week or so now, and all I can say is WOW.

Not only is it fun to play with, it also halves the time it takes to investigate #webperf and #ux issues.

Retail ad campaigns are $$$ — yet campaign landing pages are often the slowest pages on a site.

That slowness has a direct impact on conversions. 💸

I tracked landing pages for 19 leading sites to see who's fast, who's slow, and what's causing their bottlenecks.

I recently started instrumenting both @cloudflare.social and browser cache hits/misses and the numbers, while obvious, are compelling. The best request is the one that never happens. Check that 0ms TTFB 😍

The only thing worse than being forced to get support from a chatbot... is when even the chatbot doesn't want to help you.
A screenshot of a chatbot window, with the following message:

"Hello! I am your AI assistant ready to help you. How can I guide you today?"

This is followed by the deflating message:

"All chat agents are currently busy."

Years ago, when I was fretting about something or other, my son (who was around ten years old) quoted this to me. It was exactly what I needed to hear at the time. Maybe you need to hear it today?

(Fast forward ten years. My son and I designed this poster for his university dorm room.)

🔥 Quick page speed tip! Use critical CSS for faster rendering.

Users will abandon a page if it seems empty and inactive for more than 3 seconds. If they see content rendering or the skeleton of a page loading, you'll buy more time and patience.

"Why don't my numbers match between Tool A and Tool B?"

I get this question a LOT. Here's a good explainer.
speedcurve.com
Ever wonder why you get DIFFERENT NUMBERS for the SAME METRICS using different #webperf tools?

🕒 Synthetic vs synthetic?
🕕 Synthetic vs RUM?
🕘 RUM vs CruX?

Here are some of the most common reasons. (The most important thing? Track changes within a single tool!)

In today’s edition of “Guess That Unresponsive App”…

Guess this app that would’ve been really helpful — and potentially lifesaving — to access when my family and I were hiking in the mountains yesterday… but which didn’t work because we were on 3G.
Partial screenshot of an app, with the logo intentionally cropped out. What you can see is that the app has an orange background, and that it was accessed over a 3G network.

✨ SPDY STREAM 007 ✨
Had a great time yesterday w/ @tammyeverts.com + even better conversation about her current focus.
"How fast IS fast?"
This was an important q? she tackled + explained. What is fast on paper may not be in reality, even more so could be slow per your competitor's standards. 🎥 soon
Image of a stream, taking place with two tech professionals, and a browser window is shared that reads the following speed matters, why you need to know your sites, performance plateau, and how to find it. Image of two professionals during a stream, and both are smiling. One is wearing a yellow cap glasses and speaking into a microphone with yellow foam. The other is in a room with a couch behind looking into the camera.
