we've foraged 9 different species of mushroom for eating this fall and none of them have true gills under the cap (all amanitas have true gills)

i would avoid starting with anything that looks even vaguely like an amanita, since amanitas are responsible for 95% of mushroom related deaths

you can learn more species one at a time later but starting with just a few is a lot safer than just picking a bunch of different things right away and then looking through a mushroom book to tell what is what.

foraging mushrooms without poisoning yourself is actually very easy if you learn just a couple common edible and easily distinguishable mushrooms so well you could recognize them while half asleep and then only go for those.
