“National unity” without accountability isn’t healing—it’s amnesia.

We’ve tried it after the Civil War, after Watergate, after Iraq. Every time, the same patterns return.

Justice is how a democracy remembers.

We failed at this in the past as a country, many times. The most salient I think is the failure of Reconstruction following the Civil War, and the failures to hold industrialists accountable during the Gilded Age. More recently, there were Iran-Contra, Halliburton, torture/black sites, and the GWOT.

Past history...Germany and Yugoslavia required intervention from outside for that accountability. South Africa managed to do it themselves. We absolutely cannot move forward in the name of "national healing and unity".

When all of this is over, we owe it to the future to conduct a full investigation of the events from 2016-2028, with no stone left unturned, and any and all involved at all levels prosecuted for any crimes committed, regardless of party or nationality.

I mean, you wouldn’t want them to miss cocktail hour, the senior early bird special and their nap, would you?
