I’m very proud to lead a system-wide governance body that gets, and acts on, precisely this. Once I get in front of a computer, look for a brief report looking back at the UFS’s Fall 2025 Plenary that concluded on Saturday—and looking ahead to the conversations it continues and initiates.

2/2 The moment requires bold distributed decision-making. The faculty are not nieve, even if many of us are not paying enough attention. Campus cohesion, and sectoral solidarity are the two key ingredients for both survival and successful transformation to fulfill the mission and rebuild trust.

1/2 On campus leadership:
This is a measured and well articulated statement for shared governance from the Michigan faculty. It points to, and corrects, a fundamental miscalculation that many campus executives are making; namely, that the moment requires bold executive leadership.

Proud to be in regular dialogue with leaders across SUNY and at every level of SUNY System to try to ensure that this conception of shared governance is taken seriously as a baseline of meaningful faculty involvement in the making and vetting of tough decisions.

Hey, kids, there’s no better time to reread this Independence Day declaration from 10 current and former SUNY and CUNY governance leaders and add your John Hancock! Pass it on!

Not one faculty member at USC saw any bright side or silver lining to the Mutual Assured Destruction Compact. I love the suggestion to counter with a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. Our #MADC is the best response to the Upside Down/Bizarro World Mailman Compact.

Students at the 9️⃣universities: “If any one of our universities agrees to this compact, it risks creating a chain reaction for the #HigherEd system at-large to side with tyrants over students. We demand that our universities do not fold + do not sign.” 👏

Teacher working conditions are, and have always been, student learning conditions.

Freedom to learn depends on freedom to teach, but when that's at risk, transparency, inquiry, and trust erode.

These campaigns distract from the real work of helping students learn and thrive, and could prevent students from the education they need to build a fair, secure, and prosperous future.
Local colleges targeted amid growing campus culture wars
National media and conservative groups are seeking syllabi and student information from public colleges; professors say they feel targeted and harassed.

Here’s a thread evaluating arguments by someone (at Harvard, of all places) that the Mutual Assured Destruction Compact is not all bad.

The argument presented by Allen is both politically naive and historically erroneous. Accepting a compact *for higher education at this point in time* is suicidal. A 🧵

Danielle Allen has proposed many good things for Harvard, so I’m puzzled by her reading of the word “compact” here, as if this would be an agreement freely entered into. She rightly says that, as written, this shouldn’t be agreed to. Maybe leave it there? therenovator.substack.com/p/why-im-exc...

We need an entire alphabet soup of condemnation of the Mutual Assured Destruction Compact! Academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and our democratic system of shared governance must never be for sale.
