Of course if Shona Robison could somehow manage to avoid income tax rises, then Scottish workers would directly benefit - their national insurance would be reduced with no accompanying income tax increase. Wouldn’t that be tempting ahead of an election…
Because of the Fiscal Framework, the @scotgov would have little option, it seems to me, but to raise taxes to at least the same level as the UK - assuming the Chancellor does hike income tax in 3 weeks
How would @resfoundation.bsky.social tax/budget proposals impact Scotland? National insurance is reserved so an NI cut would apply in Scotland. But income tax is devolved so wouldn’t apply. Leaving the Scottish Finance Sec to raise those taxes - and take the blame? - 4 months before an election!
Maybe being PM / governing is just impossible in Britain these days. Social Media and 24hr news make it impossible. Maybe it’s not just Britain. Worldwide, which leader is currently doing a good job? Can’t think of a single one.
So depressing/upsetting about Roisin - what is she doing, apart from ruining her career? It really hurts that someone who’s championed difference in their career betrays us that way
What’s held Welsh Labour in power for the last 15 years is Tory-led government at Westminster. So now Reform will replace the Tories and Plaid will replace Labour in the Senedd in May. Ironically Rachel Reeves’ Budget is the only chance Labour has in Wales and Scotland - grim.
You might qualify in the Tory mind as a ‘contributor’ - but of course that kind of distinction is just an attempt to divide migrants (and of course is horrible dog-whistle stuff about who’s deserving and who isn’t). But after a weekend seeing tons of flags in the north, I’d be happy elsewhere*
