PRETEND SHE’S IN A FILM

I write it first person
to get the truth out.

When I finish it stings like palmed nettles.
Air judders from my lungs
as I push my chair back
but I can’t take my eyes off the words.

Let’s make her she
watch her from a distance
pretend she’s in a film
and wait for that happy ending.

The most delightful session for #NationalPoetryDay today. I read a dozen poems, people read poems, and then we all wrote poems based on the @poetrydayuk.bsky.social writing prompt. Coffee, cakes, conversation and laughter all mixed in. I think I am definitely suited to this year's theme of 'Play'.

TOFFEE HAMMERS

Chinks of tarnish interrupt the shine now,
and our hiding places have all grown small.

Days of, don’t tell mum,
of wrestling,
of being winded
and still not telling,
have fallen behind us.

Not blemished back then,
no hint of rust on those solid hammers.
We could be on the floor and up again,
sitting on the settee,
crossing our legs,
tapping for the reflex,
laughing as a foot kicked out involuntarily.

The brown rug our tournament ring
where we fought for possession.

Each round ended with the warning
of mum’s slippered feet
as her hips swayed her up the passageway.
We flung ourselves against cushions
to look settled, pretend our innocence.

Made the hammer invisible;
stuffed in a pocket,
gripped in a fist,
or shoved down inside a sock –
a hard cold knock on the knuckle
of an ankle bone.

One point to the one who had it
in their keeping when she entered.

A momentary win
while we were getting our breath back,
eyeing each other for the next round.
Preparing to hold tight, fight on.
