Tbf mass lead poisoning of young men might explain *quite a lot* of what’s been happening in recent years.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

One of the most important things I teach when I teach about the history of the FDA is how supplements are not monitored and tested like drugs are. They rely on self or 3rd party regulation, which often fails in so many ways.

Why the maths on screening often doesn’t add up
www.thetimes.com/article/1cc6...
The US National Cancer Institute estimates that if you screened 1,000 men aged 55-69 for 13 years, 240 men would have a positive result. Of those, 100 would end up diagnosed with prostate cancer, often after a biopsy.
Eighty would receive some intervention, whether radiation treatment or surgery. Of those, 50 would experience some erectile dysfunction, and 15 incontinence. Between one and two deaths would be prevented.
This is why many doctors argue that the risks - in terms of unnecessary surgery and unnecessary worry - outweigh the benefits.

I like books as objects but I also really don't see how anyone not liking books as objects affects me at all. And shouting at people on the internet is pointless anyway. Social media makes people weird huh 🤷🏼‍♂️

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

Inexplicably, my son’s very standard state school - in a mixed area, not a particularly affluent one - arranged a £4K trip to Kenya last year. I keep meaning to do a story on the astonishing escalation of the school trip.

Tomorrow: DEAD ENDS comes out in the US! Aimed at kids aged 8-12, @tealcartoons.bsky.social and I think everyone will love this grisly romp through medical history. Please consider ordering a copy, and enjoy the weird stories we've uncovered that prove failure is essential to scientific progress.

When does death begin?

In the 18th century, no one could agree—some said when the pulse stopped, others when the body began to rot. Out of that debate came a century of strange experiments on severed heads.

Learn more in our kids’ book DEAD ENDS (w/ @tealcartoons.bsky.social): shorturl.at/FS3nd
A cartoon by Adrian Teal that depicts a guillotine and a severed head, with a modern-looking doctor holding a stethoscope to the head. The cover of DEAD ENDS featuring a cartoon man being electrocuted back to life

This may be the worst nutrition trial I've ever seen.

Subjects got a minimally processed diet or an ultra-processed diet, ostensibly to test the effect of processing.

But the UPF diet was higher in sat fat, sugar, refined grains, & lower in fiber.

What happened?

Idly wondering what a public health campaign on this would look like, and why stuff we tried for, eg, drink driving, isn't being used.

I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day
jamesdaustin.bsky.social
Everyone knows at least one person (normally, but not exclusively, a guy) whose gone properly mental due to net rabbit holes.

We see public figures regularly go mad and destroy themselves.

And we have, at a policy level, just decided to put our fingers in our ears and go nahnahnah

Thanks Martin. I've got away with it for this long! Just need to keep up the facade for another 20 years or so then I can retire.
