This book gets five stars for making me feel so dirty and disgusted, and for the absolute insanity that @paperbacksandpugs.bsky.social always brings to his work. Turning that last page, mouth agape, I kept thinking to myself- what the fuck did I just read, and why, oh why, did I love it so much! 🙂

No middle book drag or disappointment here. R.F. Kuang puts her characters through the meat grinder, but still manages to inject humor in all the right places. Have nothing but love for this compulsively readable story of war torn nations and the people who reside there.

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation
