A White-tailed Doe and a rabbit shared a quiet moment at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.
This wild caterpillar looked like something from a sci-fi movie, but it is real and harmless. Meet the Hickory Horned Devil I found in Arkansas a few years ago.
Tufted Titmouse Calling from a Limb
Underside View of a Garden Spider
Nature’s small dramas are always worth watching.
This garden spider caught and wrapped a grasshopper.

Mourning Dove at Birdbath in Morning Light
I photographed this Brown Thrasher right in the middle of its bath in my birdbath here in Arkansas.
This Brown Thrasher was having the best time in the birdbath! Always a treat to see these usually shy birds let loose for a moment.
Brown Thrasher in a Burst of Morning Splash
This Brown Thrasher went wild in my birdbath, pure feathered joy!
A Carolina Wren on a thin branch, tail raised in its familiar pose.
Carolina Wren on Rain Gauge
This Northern Cardinal looks like he’s had a rough week! I photographed him in my Arkansas yard in early October while he was going through his fall molt.
A scruffy but beautiful Eastern Bluebird in the middle of molt this October morning.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird Feeding on Red Flowers
The fox squirrels in my yard have been working nonstop this October, gathering acorns from what looks like a true mast year.
Have you noticed more acorns or squirrel activity where you live this fall?
This male Collared Lizard was perched on a sun-baked rock at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. He sat there with his mouth open, soaking up the heat and showing off those striking colors.
White-tailed Fawn at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma
This Ruby-throated Hummingbird I saw this season paused for a quiet moment of feather care before heading south. Preening keeps their wings in perfect shape for the long flight to Central America. Always amazed by how much determination fits in something so small.
I haven’t seen a Ruby-throated Hummingbird since October 10th. It looks like they’ve moved on for the season, but I’ll keep my feeders up a little longer just in case a late traveler passes through.
Collared Lizard on a lichen-covered rock at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
Early morning storm light and dramatic skies over Lake Jed Johnson highlight the rugged beauty of the Wichita Mountains.
I watched this Collared Lizard soaking up the sun on a warm rock at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (Oklahoma).
I photographed the historic Jed Johnson Tower at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. The stone structure, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, stands on a ridge overlooking Lake Jed Johnson and the surrounding granite hills.
