"The Devil's Children", by Sarah Langan:
Absolutely phenomenal characters and storytelling, and this one could be subtitled, "Hubris is the New Black (Death)"! Yet another perfectly placed "finale" in this particular section!

It also contained one of the most interesting characters to which I've ever been introduced, like someone I've known all my life yet only just met.

This felt like just the expertly-crafted opening chapter of a much bigger, deeper story, and I, for one, would be interested in experiencing the rest of it!

One would think that by now I would see these twists coming, but the seamless narrative drew me in and carried me along for the ride, allowing the turn to sneak up like a thief in the night. Beautifully done!
