Mr Bear giggled at you. “If you say so little one~” he cooed, before launching into his song that you knew by heart.

The screen flickered. Your eyes glazed. Your nappy was soft and warm.

Mr Bear’s song wouldn’t last long, you knew, but that was okay...

You watched the screen adoringly, bouncing in place. You did wonder idly what "potty training" was, but you nodded along anyway, just happy hearing Mr Bear’s voice.

You felt so much lighter now, like a fog had been lifted, like you were seeing clearly again for the first time in a long, long time.

“Are you excited for me to teach you all about potty training again? Judging by that big soggy nappy it looks like you have a lot to relearn~”

“Hi Mistah Bear!” you babbled excitedly, squishing down on your padded bottom and planting your thumb between your drooly lips. You were already feeling the nostalgia, the warm emotions flooding back. You knew this had been a good idea.

The TV bathed you in its light and your eyes filled with stars. Your legs bowed, struggling to keep your balance as warm wetness suddenly enveloped your crotch, like a hug from an old friend. A shiver ran down your spine.

The tape reached its start. The TV went dark, then burst alive again.

With an eager smile, you pressed rewind.

Your ears filled with senseless noise, as the tape rolled back at incoherent speed, further and further. Flashing colour illuminated the dark attic, engulfing your vision, as imagery of training potties and gold stars gave way to soft, crinkly diapers.

The VCR flashed onto the screen, beginning to play. You frowned.

That wasn’t right. Mr Bear was already cheering for you, telling you what a good job you’d done going potty. Credits rolled.

It took you a few seconds to figure it out and realise how silly you were being.

Tapes needed rewinding.

You slid the tape in with a satisfying click. You held your breath in anticipation. Your mind wandered back to those times, singing and dancing along with Mr Bear, how he’d showered you with praise when you finally got it right. You were excited to feel it again, even if it was just for a moment.

Giggling, you loped over to the old CRT as you unboxed the bright red cassette. Why shouldn’t you take a little trip down memory lane? It’d be fun! It was just some harmless nostalgia.

It took a bit of fiddling with the cables, but you eventually got the VCR connected. The screen hummed to life.

You’d been a late bloomer when it came to potty training. You didn’t want to give up your nappies until well into pre-school. Your parents must’ve put on Mr Bear on loop for you every day before you were finally willing to give the potty a try. You got there in the end, much to your parents’ relief.
