I'm increasingly skeptical that "another birdsite" is the answer but there's so many people I can only keep in touch with on the social, so here we are. My old feed was a mix of lefty politics, tech/games, and religion. Trying to find more of the same, but now with migration/refugee stuff thrown in.

you're in Boston, yes? do you need anything brought to the hospital? (I assume you are set for such things but HEY)

The Pope is evidently a decent man & good priest with a huge task, but him yelling to a random guy about the Cubs like he's in the parking lot at Menards will always make me double-check if I'm sober

Prefer with, but not a strong preference.

gonna lose followers for this, but

Perhaps instead of Columbus Day we can celebrate Columbian Exchange Day where we celebrate the food pairings that had never been possible before, peppers and onions, chocolate and coffee, basil and tomatoes.

Isn't it?! And like with NT translations I can't really say one is "right" or "wrong" but they are definitely DISTINCT FEELS

(Many of the same issues arise with New Testament translations! It's interesting to me how quickly I can tell from the texture of it what the translator's goals were.)

Ok seems the recommendation these days is Emily Wilson, but I also discovered Caroline Alexander did a translation of The Iliad that seems to preserve more of the Greek syntax? I'm torn. (Love that this comparison site exists, too.) www.iliadtranslations.com/compare/alex...

oh noooooo footnotes?! they are going to DISTRACT me because my brain cannot resist¹

1. Source: I read a lot of Bible translations

you're not wrong

also don't we need to have an O Brother night?

Wilson seems to be the Consensus New Hotness™!

Ah, this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

I know every generation gets a new translation of The Iliad (and presumably The Odyssey) so what's the current go-to? Last time I read the whole thing was the 90s when Fagles was the choice of the day; it was solid (as far as I recall) but would love to check out something newer/more interesting.

relatedly, if you like action novels? read the fucking Illiad. Get a good translation, it's like a goddamn epic action movie. You will not regret reading the Illiad I'm so serious.

i love Stover's read of Anakin as, basically, Achilles-- the nearly immortal warrior brought down by his own fear of death

(ok I guess sometimes they're vaguely evocative to the point they can become the title, like Spore, but that hews closer to the "it's obvious" school)
sjml.bsky.social
also project codenames are always either completely obvious (SpaceMafia -> Among Us) or completely obscure (LMNO) and I'm not sure why anyone would think we'd go through the efforts of *partially obfuscating* a codename like that? fans gonna fan, I guess.

after hearing Mike Duncan's account of the ✨mYsTeRiOuS✨ death of Attila the Hun I was convinced that Assassin's Creed would do a "Fall of the Roman Empire" take in central/eastern Europe but I so far remain unsatisfied

(growing up I had a print of one of Struzan's Star Wars one-sheets on my wall that included a copyright notice for "Revenge of the Jedi" so was probably worth a good deal money if multiple teenage boys had not used thumbtacks to pin it up)

I don't even mean "you" in the derogatory kind of "you, Eric Trump, of all people" but in the broader sense of "humanity writ large, any of us, even the greatest or most virtuous."
sjml.bsky.social
What kind of God do you claim to worship that is so fragile as to need saving by you?
atrupar.com
Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

oh man! Struzan is one of those names that even a lot of film nerds don't know and then you show the work and they're like "wait, that was all ONE person doing all of that for decades?!"

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

Showing up to No Kings with a sign reading “monarchy is an affront to human dignity but, when incorporated into a liberal democratic system, may nevertheless be a useful safety valve for nationalist and/or authoritarian impulses” and then getting clobbered by a Buttigieg-supporting grandmother
mthrjo.bsky.social
Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--
