I'm increasingly skeptical that "another birdsite" is the answer but there's so many people I can only keep in touch with on the social, so here we are. My old feed was a mix of lefty politics, tech/games, and religion. Trying to find more of the same, but now with migration/refugee stuff thrown in.

(Many of the same issues arise with New Testament translations! It's interesting to me how quickly I can tell from the texture of it what the translator's goals were.)

Ok seems the recommendation these days is Emily Wilson, but I also discovered Caroline Alexander did a translation of The Iliad that seems to preserve more of the Greek syntax? I'm torn. (Love that this comparison site exists, too.) www.iliadtranslations.com/compare/alex...

I know every generation gets a new translation of The Iliad (and presumably The Odyssey) so what's the current go-to? Last time I read the whole thing was the 90s when Fagles was the choice of the day; it was solid (as far as I recall) but would love to check out something newer/more interesting.

also project codenames are always either completely obvious (SpaceMafia -> Among Us) or completely obscure (LMNO) and I'm not sure why anyone would think we'd go through the efforts of *partially obfuscating* a codename like that? fans gonna fan, I guess.

(growing up I had a print of one of Struzan's Star Wars one-sheets on my wall that included a copyright notice for "Revenge of the Jedi" so was probably worth a good deal money if multiple teenage boys had not used thumbtacks to pin it up)

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--
