At least the fox took them fairly cleanly, apart from a few feathers, so we didn't have to deal with a scene of carnage. I would have been furious too.

We've had them about 15 years. Totally free range. Never locked the coop at night. Then this spring the fox widened it's hunting area, and our chickens become the victims instead of the ususl ones in the commune.

It certainly is.
I remember, one time, I threw a dart about 15 metres to a dartboard, in front of a crowd of people. It hit the bullseye right as the lift doors opened. I stepped in, pressed the button and the doors closed. I'll always remember those open mouths.

Thanks. I was thinking that too. Our last lot ( taken by a fox, hence the automatic door) used to go in very early, well before sunset. I'll keep an eye on them for a few days and tweak the times.

Weve been missing them. Good quality free range eggs are expensive, and commercial ones are produced to a budget (obviously). Ours are spoilt rotten, and it really shows in the eggs, so the hens will pay for themselves in several ways, quite quickly.

The chickens have been moved in. They're really quite friendly. We bought 'Prêt à pondre des œufs' so we'll be enjoying our own very soon. We're leaving them to settle in. Photos to follow.
