Hi #envhum — long overdue intro post!

In fact, it could have been even more haunting, had I pressed the right button inside the Blåfjell Mine :))

Thanks! No worries, I would've been v surprised. But also, you're already there in spirit, in the presence of certain field recordings 🪨🪨🪨

With the controversies around new mining plans, it was also a chance to reflect on the possible futures of Sokndal — from labour to resistance, displaced communities, environmental violence and post-extractivism.

Anorthosite is abundant there, the same rock type that composes the bright side of the moon. In the mining of titanium, it is a waste product. In these moon-like landscapes, industrial ruins co-exist with dreams of optimization. And poetically, there are no tides on the coast.

How does prospective mining on the Moon mirror prior forms of extractivism on Earth?

In July, I visited the Blåfjell and Tellnes Mines near #MagmaGeopark in Southwest Norway to collect video materials and talk with local experts about mining heritage.

A must-read for environmental historians, labour historians, & historians of embodiment, trade, Britain, the Thames, and more.

Conceptually ambitious & a really good story with an unexpected & dramatic denouement.

I have been using a lot this book by Cara New Dagett for my thesis on #petroculture and narratives in the Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger. My aim was to show how petroculture informs us and reinforce bigger systems: patriarchy, capitalism and extractivism.

"I wonder [how] we might rethink our relationship with the shore, one that has been marked by trauma, dependence, and ambivalence? What does it mean to return to the shore as an epistemic space—a site for liberatory political imagination?"

Recently came across the Insurgent Geologies series at @eflux.bsky.social! Very interesting works on architecture, geology and its colonial grammars of extraction (and critical interventions).

(Shores show up, too.)
