I remember driving and suddenly Dad pulled over and got out. He’d seen an elderly lady struggling with her little cart of groceries, maybe she’d even fallen, and stopped to help her. He had my Mom drive the car along as he walked her home and helped her get her groceries inside.

So many days I get through by telling myself that I can’t let my Mom know how truly miserable I am. I just have to keep up the act until she’s gone. I fight my body and the exhaustion it creates in my psyche to not predecease her. Some days it isn’t as hard, others it’s harder.

The only time I ever mouthed off to police was on behalf of my dogs. “Can you get them under control?” “You need to get yourself under control and give me a second, your energy is why they’re acting like this. I don’t want you shooting my dogs.”

I have long believed that we should be WAY more vocal about how police and ICE constantly murder dogs, and I think this is great messaging actually.

The reality is that you can mobilize a whole lot of usually tuned-out Americans around a “someone is being mean to hecking doggos” cause.
