As someone who was secually abused, this collection speaks to me in some ways much better than Lauris Halse Anderson’s SHOUT. It is honest and speaks to other survivors, first and foremost. Written accessibly with some of the most fantastic nightmare hell imagery + poem combinations, Canvas of Scars doesn’t hold back on how frankly unlovable you feel and “punished for existing” with the combined effect of PTSD, neurodivergency, abuse, queerness, trauma, religion, loneliness, hauntings and monsters. If you’re also a survivor, then this probably will have a similar effect to what Astarion in BG3 or SHOUT did for others by helping see what patterns are your trauma, not you.If you are struggling with a lot of these thoughts, remember to spite N@zis because they would absolutely hate you realizing you’re not alone and are worthy of care (by yourself and others). Also, the collection contains support, hotlines to call, and other helpful info for folx struggling at the end. Definitely check that out!Voidlust, Soiled Lace, page 71 art poem, The Omen, Drowning Apathetic, are some of my favorites from this collection. Page 117-118 are some of the most powerful and what I’ve experienced myself writing my own experiences (“god, there’s no breaks [pauses from dismal trauma] at all in this” and miss the point they’re supposed to understand how bad it is and don’t get a release as we don’t get a release. I’m incredibly honored to have been given an ARC copy to read and definitely believe we need more survivor-to-survivor books, not written palatable for the masses.“The world is better with you in it.
