Sense of self is cocreated through internal (biology, personality) and external (culture, experience) factors and change over time. We should all be free to live as we are. The concern is harmful medicalisation of unconventional young people, most who would grow up to be healthy gay adults.

I think we've agreed that you can't change sex without hormones and surgeries (with resulting side effects and costs). What is gender? If it's sex stereotypes (eg women have long hair and wear dresses) then why can't we be more accepting of unconventional people?

No. Just concerned by the commercialisation of embodied distress in children and adolescents, who should be accepted exactly as they are. In terms of gendered roles we should celebrate all presentations.

No deviation. Most people would agree you can't reduce your age through plastic surgery, although you can change the appearance of your age. Do you think sex is the only thing you can change through body modification?

Demi Moore, like many old Hollywood stars, looks much much younger than she is. This is often due to plastic surgery. Noone would consider her to have reduced her age.

Body modification surgery and hormones can change your appearance but won't change you. Surely we should be helping people, particularly children, be happy in their bodies as they are - to be accepted as they are free of any stereotype.

Conversion therapy provokes strong emotional reactions, understandably. In the 1950s it meant giving electric shocks to gay people.

It is beyond extreme to consider exploratory talking therapies, consensually helping people accept themselves, to be akin to electric shocks.

Quite a shift in public attitudes over the last few years. A minor quibble is that gender is used in place of sex in the questions, however in 2020 - unbelievably - you could lose your job for stating what we all know, that sex is real and has societal consequence.

Augustin Fuentis seems to generalise from edge cases, across species & primates. He clearly understand that males and females exist and defines the categories fairly accurately. Easy question - can humans change sex?
