Review: Hair, Paper, Water…
18/08/2025 - Nicolas Graux and Trương Minh Quý co-direct a pensively beautiful documentary miniature focusing on an elderly Vietnamese lady and her large extended family

nice mentions of the sound, e.g., "its most potent moments take the form of sounds disconnected from the images themselves.... the filmmakers never attempt to imitate sync sound and its reality; instead, there’s always a slight lag here or there, drawing attention to the artifice."

A mellifluous film of memories floating downstream, “Hair, Paper, Water” from Nicolas Graux and Trương Minh Quý (one of my favourite filmmakers) follows an elderly Rục woman adjusting to the modern world, and adapts to her mode of language in turn #NYFF63 joysauce.com/a-grandmothe...
A grandmother floats homeward in ‘Hair, Paper, Water…’
Director of “Việt and Nam,” Trương Minh Quý returns to the remote Rục tribe for his latest documentary, which premiered at NYFF.

Another good time to remind people that “tear gas” is a term of copaganda that police, the military, and its manufacturers use to obscure that it is a dangerous chemical weapon internationally banned for use even in warfare.

"Graux’s 16mm photography is equal parts raw and opulent, and the sound design, by Trương and Ernst Karel, pays justice to every living creature (bees, monkeys, tigers, bats) under a perpetually clouded sun."

Appreciate the emphasis on sound in this review, e.g.:

"As images reach us in fragments, sound weaves a continuity from off-screen to on-screen, carrying the emotion through the film and irrigating the streams of images, like water flowing."

Imagine studying a technology whose presence in the classroom is so detrimental to the development of writing and research skills (including even the will to know the sources behind claims!) that mitigating its effects becomes a central goal of course design, and concluding with tips on adopting it.

"near the bear," is out today! From walrus encounters at 79° N to watching the ocean freeze at -35° C, the album celebrates the High Arctic. Sounds played on natural and human-made objects intertwine with field recordings and site-specific improvisations in five works about Svalbard & Greenland.

Just finished screening The Hottest August (Brett Story, 2019) as the first film for my ecocinema class and goddamn that's a great movie. This is the fourth(?) time I've seen it and each time it gets better and better--more alive, and more urgent. Hope the students felt the same.

Xynthii users, I've added some significant features.
Oscs:
1. You can now switch between frequency modulation and phase modulation. Alt/option click the fm text box to switch. It is quite a different sound.
2. All oscs can use all three waveforms now.
