Passing Pembrey Signal Box. 21 October 2025. #railway #photography

Network Rail Track Assessment Unit 950001 is seen just having passed Pembrey signal box and cleared lower-quadrant semaphore PY81 as it works 2Q08 Whitland Down Sidings to Canton Taff Vale Sidings. The signal box is due to be abolished at the end of this month.

TfW DMU 197102, working 1K09 Crewe to Holyhead, is seen at Gaerwen. The semaphore signal can be seen at the left edge of the frame, having now returned to danger.

Semaphores at Dalwhinnie. 16 June 2019. #railway #photography

Facing the camera, a pair of semaphores - DW17 and DW7 - situated just to the north of the station platforms at Dalwhinnie. A further semaphore is mounted on a bracket some way beyond facing away. The dramatic scenery of the Scottish highlands makes up the background.

Transport for Wales DMU 197020 passes cleared lower-quadrant semaphore FS21 as it approaches Ferryside working 1V35 to Milford Haven. The signal, which is due to be replaced shortly, is looking rather worse for wear, missing its finial and on a distinctly rusty pole.

At one end of platform 3 at Holyhead station is this semaphore signal and shunting arm. The home signal is fixed but the shunting arm appears as if it could still be used.

Cleared lower-quadrant semaphore signal PY82 at the end of the eastbound platform at Pembrey & Burry Port. The green crosses on the pole are an indication that its days are numbered: a long-delayed resignalling is now happening at the end of this month (October 2025).

Arriva Trains Wales DMU 150282 approaches Craven Arms working 1W61 to Manchester Piccadilly. Both of the semaphores seen in this photo have now been removed after the improvements to the junction with the Heart of Wales line.
