Delighted to share this one, as it has been on the cards for ages: a conversation with Holly Dicker about hardcore dance music movements and her essential new book on the subject, Dance Or Die: A History of Hardcore. Listen to the conversation via the article below

While she has led her party into the depths of insane X-based far right commentary and, unless something changes, electoral oblivion

To mangle a Stuart Lee quote, it’s not just the insane but also c*nts (etc etc)

Saw “OpenAI Ethics” trending and my first thought was “what ethics?” Altman and co appear to have none

Cat versus Lego: a story in two parts
Bandita, a cute cat, using her paws to fiddle with Lego models on the mantelpiece, including a McLaren F1 car Bandita, front of shot, slinking away after dumping a Lego F1 car onto the floor.
Clear red flag situation!

On the centenary of Thatcher's birth, there have been predictable calls for a memorial to her memory. But Britain's 2300 food banks serve that purpose already.

That and the pathetically unconvincing nature of his ridiculous combover. Some poor WH cleaner will be scrubbing ketchup off the walls tonight

‘Incredible’ is doing some heavy lifting there. Looks like the work of a 12 year-old.

The Bristol equivalent was the radio ads for Bristol Carpet Factory. Some fantastic local accents and a fiendishly catchy jingle. Later sampled and turned into a tune by the appropriately named Kid Carpet

Also the “different time to now” is key - his records and remixes stood pot because of that. Pity he doesn’t make many dancefloor records any more - though I do understand why since he has written and produced pop hits for other artists. He did say he had been working on aomething though 👀
sellbydave.bsky.social
Oh yeah. He was still quite early in his production journey then and it blows my mind how accomplished and visionary it was. Like you say the sheer amount of credits (same for his own Perspex Sex - another epic) and people involved is crazy when you consider it was mostly done in his home studio

Yes. I had to turn the radio off - sickening but sadly not surprising triumphalism ftom two of the worst people on Earth.

It really is. The amount of work he put in is astonishing, though you can hear that. Just editing the drum recordings once he had sampled them up must have taken forever, especially to get the drum track to sound live. It’s a masterclass in the potential of the remix I’d say

Anu’s mix is mad - uses bits of Isolee’s original version but goes off on a kind of Latin jazz/Nuyorican Soul odyssey complete with live drums, flute, sax, guitar etc etc. A total overhaul and a proper epic
sellbydave.bsky.social
Haha. I had Isolee’s “Beau Mot Plage” stuck in my head yesterday. I blame interviewing Anu Pillai (Freeform Five) last week, in which we spent about 10 minutes talking about his insane 12-minute rebuild (which apparently took him six months to complete)

Last week I spoke to Elle Clark for a special episode of her Curved Track show on Rinse FM devoted to JD Twitch. Nice to share some memories and select a couple of tunes

On the plus side/minus side (delete as appropriate), I now have that stuck in my head. It’s a banger mind so could be worse 😁

Some of the stuff for adults, especially the icons and Ideas stuff, is really good. Expensive, unfortunately, but usually a very good building experience. As for the kids stuff, my nephew (7) loves it and it definitely inspires creative play. He frequently asks me to join him in making new things

I once did an interview with Me Scruff about DJing, getting him to give advice (our readers were largely bedroom DJs). How first piece of advice was to know your record collection inside out. Second was “learn how to warn up”. Both excellent pieces of advice

That’s why people like the late JD Twitch were (and are) so good. The one time I got the chance to play B2B with him, my then housemate - a young dj then in his 20s - told me how impressed he was by how much “reading the floor” we were doing when not mixing. I was proud - most don’t notice!

Also, since when has “40s”
= “elderly”? Is the original poster 12 or something?
sellbydave.bsky.social
That and hype for mediocre sets where whoever it is (young or old) just does their thing, cycling through a prepared set list/Rekordbox playlist while not bothering to attempt to read the dancefloor at any point. Generally being able to do that well comes with experience but even then not all get it

Of course they are supported and funded by Turning Point UK. Not content with crashing and burning their own country, American Christian nationalists want to crash and burn ours too. They can do one
